Cindy DiFazio - Staff Writer
|
The Ripley County Council held its regular monthly
meeting and annual budget hearing on Tuesday, September
19 at 7:00 p.m. All council members were present with
the exception of Bill Dramann. Auditor, Mary Ann McCoy
and attorney, Neil Comer also were present.
The EDIT (Economic Development Income Tax) budget
became a hot-button issue when introduced later in
the meeting. Robert Reiners, president of the Ripley
County Commissioners took the podium and explained
the commissioners budget plan which had already
been submitted to the council.
Reiners said that the commissioners proposed
budget included $200,000 each year for the years 2007-2008
for EDIT. The council was requesting $450,000. Reiners,
in an attempt to garner support for their plan said,
We are hoping the council considers our plan,
adding Were kind of between a rock and
a hard place, not knowing what road repair materials
will cost this winter. The commissioners were asking
for $500,000 to be budgeted for bituminous and stone

Wanda
English Burnett - Editor

If you like corn on the cob, pork barbecue, cider
and pumpkin rolls, the Versailles Lions Club stand
is the place to be at this years Versailles
Pumpkin Show on the square.
Each year after the last ride is torn down and
the last trash picked up from the streets, members
of the Versailles Lions Club, sponsors of the
event, begin making plans for the following year.
Plans for this year include a new food stand that
promises to serve something different - roasted
corn on the cob.

school bus driver hailed a hero
Wanda
English Burnett - Editor

While she didnt
have much control about the bus she was driving
being on fire, Gerri Driggers did have control
of getting the one student on board to safety.
The incident occurred about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday
afternoon when Driggers was driving her usual
bus route transporting a South Ripley student
who attends classes at Milan. I had one
student on and I knew I had to get him off quickly,
she told The Versailles Republican as she was
being checked out by personnel from Milans
life squad at the scene. No one was injured in
the incident, although Driggers said she was quite
shaken.

Large
crowds attend both events
Local sesquicentennial festivities enjoyed
Cathy
May - Contributing Writer
|
It was an extremely positive experience,
said Osgood 2006 President Jerry Vollmer after
the celebration was over.
The celebration was truly a success. We
accomplished what we set out to accomplish. The
one thing that touched me the most was the way
the town and its citizens cleaned up their homes
and properties and took a pride in Osgood that
I have never seen before. I believe the celebration
accomplished two things, it brought people to
Osgood who had never been here before and established
a positive camaraderie among the citizens of Osgood.
