Commissioners hear proposal
What about having an airport in Ripley County?

Frank Thompson, a Mike Sodrel staffer, Mary Ann Wise- Castner, local realtor, and Herman Strumpf appeared before the Ripley County commissioners’ meeting on Monday, September 25. The three were there to pitch the possibility of a Southeastern Indiana Regional Airport locating in Ripley County. They are asking that the commissioners consider an agreement to be the sponsoring political subdivision and support a developing “Airport Working Group.”

Julie Berry with Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning opened the Osgood Town Board meeting with a public hearing for the Water System Improvement Project. She presented council with the Resolution to authorize the submittal of the Community Focus Fund application to the Indiana Office of Rural Affairs. It is a $1,049,000 project. This will be the third time the town has applied for the $500,000 grant. The town will receive a $150,000 grant from the Reynolds Foundation and a $50,000 grant from the Rising Sun Regional Foundation pending the awarding of the CFF grant. The town will come up with the remaining $349,000. The Resolution to submit the grant was approved.

IBMA to honor Boys from Indiana

The opening paragraph of the letter sent from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) to The Boys From Indiana in care of Aubrey Holt reads, “On behalf of our worldwide membership, it is my distinct privilege to share that IBMA will bestow you the honors of our Distinguished Achievement Award for your contributions and pioneering efforts on behalf of bluegrass music.”

County Council, Commissioners divided on budget

The Ripley County Council held its regular monthly meeting and annual budget hearing on Tuesday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. All council members were present with the exception of Bill Dramann. Auditor, Mary Ann McCoy and attorney, Neil Comer also were present.

The EDIT (Economic Development Income Tax) budget became a hot-button issue when introduced later in the meeting. Robert Reiners, president of the Ripley County Commissioners took the podium and explained the commissioners’ budget plan which had already been submitted to the council.
Reiners said that the commissioners’ proposed budget included $200,000 each year for the years 2007-2008 for EDIT. The council was requesting $450,000. Reiners, in an attempt to garner support for their plan said, “We are hoping the council considers our plan,” adding “We’re kind of between a rock and a hard place,” not knowing what road repair materials will cost this winter. The commissioners were asking for $500,000 to be budgeted for bituminous and stone for the highway department.

If you like corn on the cob, pork barbecue, cider and pumpkin rolls, the Versailles Lions Club stand is the place to be at this year’s Versailles Pumpkin Show on the square.

Each year after the last ride is torn down and the last trash picked up from the streets, members of the Versailles Lions Club, sponsors of the event, begin making plans for the following year. Plans for this year include a new food stand that promises to serve something different - roasted corn on the cob.

SR school bus driver hailed a hero

While she didn’t have much control about the bus she was driving being on fire, Gerri Driggers did have control of getting the one student on board to safety.

The incident occurred about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when Driggers was driving her usual bus route transporting a South Ripley student who attends classes at Milan. “I had one student on and I knew I had to get him off quickly,” she told The Versailles Republican as she was being checked out by personnel from Milan’s life squad at the scene. No one was injured in the incident, although Driggers said she was “quite shaken.”

 

Tyson Fund awards more than $700,000

On Thursday, September 14, Versailles celebrated “Uncle Jim” Tyson’s 150th birthday at the Tyson Library. The Young Confederates girls’ chorus from SRHS kicked off the celebration with tunes from The Wizard of Oz and Wicked, the Broadway play about Oz.

Dave Westmeyer, president of the Tyson Foundation, announced that in 2006 the foundation was pleased to announce they were able to dispense more than $700,000 for local non-profit organizations. Westmeyer related that in 1924 the charity had $20,000 to work with. As of August 19, 2006 it has grown to more than $19,000,000.

Private First Class Anthony P. Seig, 19, of Sunman (Weisburg Road) lost his life while serving as a soldier in Operation Iraqi Freedom last Saturday, September 9.

The Milan Town Board met in regular session on Monday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. Prior to the pledge to the flag, all in attendance observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

“It was an extremely positive experience,” said Osgood 2006 President Jerry Vollmer after the celebration was over.
“The celebration was truly a success. We accomplished what we set out to accomplish. The one thing that touched me the most was the way the town and its citizens cleaned up their homes and properties and took a pride in Osgood that I have never seen before. I believe the celebration accomplished two things, it brought people to Osgood who had never been here before and established a positive camaraderie among the citizens of Osgood.”

Queen pageant was a royal event

Kaitlin Hughes was crowned Queen of the Osgood Sesquicentennial on Friday at the Jac-Cen-Del High School. The pageant got off to a “hot” start when members of the Osgood Volunteer Fire Department danced to the song “Fire” by the Ohio Players onto the stage to escort the ten candidates who modeled their favorite sportswear. Lila Neal, president of the Osgood Kiwanis who sponsored the contest, emceed the program and introduced all of the candidates.

Task Unit 1 told to merge with Osgood VFD

In a called meeting, the possibility of merging Task Unit 1 with the Osgood Volunteer Fire Department brought some mixed feelings among the groups involved.

The meeting was held August 28 at the Task Unit 1 building at the request of Center Township Trustee Bill Warren. In attendance were fire chiefs and officers from the Osgood, Napoleon and Delaware fire departments, along with trustees from Jackson, Center and Delaware townships - Bill Warren, Joan Menchhofer, and Paul A. Hardy - and three members of Task Unit 1 including President Doug Wright.
