Sunman Town Council upgrades equipment

After weeks of searching and making comparisons, the Sunman Town Council decided on Zimmer Tractor’s bid of a Kubota L3400HST with a loader at a cost of $16,200. They offered a $3,500 trade for the old tractor, making the final cost $12,700.

Photo ID is necessary at the polls next week

You will need photo ID at the polls next Tuesday, November 7. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has extended all license branch hours to allow for the issuance of state-issued photo identification cards and driver licenses to meet the general election deadline.

Those in attendance at the Meet Your Candidates Night Monday, heard from 15 prospective candidates for the fall election. The event was sponsored by the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Cathy May.

On Wednesday, October 25 at 10:30 a.m. in Judge Carl Taul’s courtroom, the matter of Richard Oldfield vs. the State of Indiana came to a close.

 

Commissioners give nod to college classes for inmates

Larry Montgomery, Regional Director of the College Cooperative Southeast, appeared before the regular meeting of the Ripley County Commissioners on Monday, October 23. Based in Greensburg, Montgomery oversees community college programs in ten counties. Also present were Dr. Joe Moore, Academic Dean of ITCC-Region 11 and George Hughes, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, ITCC-Region 11.

Attorney says there's more to the story

Sentencing will take place Wednesday for Richard (Ricky) Oldfield on charges of Battery With a Deadly Weapon. Oldfield pled guilty to the charges that stemmed from an incident that occurred in April of 2005.

Smoking policy to be developed for Milan schools

At the regular meeting of the Milan School Board, Superintendent Andrew Jackson addressed the meeting concerning a corporation smoking policy. Jackson reported that recently there was an incident at a football game pitting smokers against non-smokers.

In light of the recent violence in schools across the nation, the Dearborn Educators’ Association has taken action after they were apprised of a situation involving a student, who has pled guilty to violent crimes, and been allowed to continue to attend East Central High School.

Batesville man faces felony charges

Steve A. Ross, 54, of Batesville, appeared for an initial hearing last week, October 10, in Ripley Circuit Court. He has been formally charged with two counts of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, Class B Felonies.

Osgood merchants get ready for holidays

At the October meeting of the Osgood Merchants Association, the Christmas Walk was discussed. Themes and activities were proposed, with a special meeting planned October 24 at 6:30 p.m. at DiGiovonnis Coffee Shop. The purpose of the meeting will be to make decisions concerning the event. Any merchant interested in joining the Osgood Merchants Association is invited to attend. There are presently 21 members, including six new businesses

Legionnaires welcome National Commander to Versailles

At least 100 American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary members from the 9th District gathered outside Post #173 in Versailles on Monday morning. It was a momentous occasion. The newly elected National Commander of the American Legion, Paul Morin, would soon arrive as a part of the National Commander’s Tour.

Plans for the future made at Milan

Milan Town Manager John Ingram, reported at the regular meeting of the town board on Monday, October 8, that he had attended a meeting in Osgood of the Main Street Program. Main Street is affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and helps towns with revitalization projects. He said that Main Street state representative, Ellen Harper, facilitated the meeting which was well-attended.

Cemetery upkeep issue at Grandview

Amidst legal wrangling between current and former owners of the Grandview Memorial Gardens cemetery, located outside of Madison, a group calling itself the Volunteers for Grandview Committee (VFGC) has come together to bring attention to the immediate needs at the facility.

Those wanting to vote in the fall election have to be registered to vote by Tuesday, October 10, according to information from the Ripley County Clerk, Ginger Bradford.
