Jurors to hear testimony of children
Jury trial for Holton man began Tuesday

Jury trial for Brian Tyler, 23, Columbus, (formerly of Holton) began in Ripley County Circuit Court Tuesday, November 28. The jury was seated at 3:05 p.m. taking longer than Prosecutor Ric Hertel could remember ever taking for a jury selection before.

Milan principal announces retirement

At the regular meeting of the Milan School Board, Monday, November 20, Superintendent Andrew Jackson shared MHS principal Michael Parks’ letter of resignation. In it, Parks announced that he would resign at the end of the 2007 school year. He wrote, “I hope my 35 years in education have made a difference, but only time will tell. The challenges in the future for Milan High School are great. I wish all the students, staff and administration the very best in the years ahead.” Randy Kirk made the motion to accept Parks’ resignation, seconded by Gregory Lewis. Motion carried 4-0, with Randy Kirk abstaining. Board president, David Voss, said that Mr. Parks had made a difference in many people’s lives and deserved to retire.

All three commissioners were present for the regular meeting of the Ripley County Commissioners on Monday, November 20, along with County Auditor, Mary Ann McCoy and Attorney, Neil Comer.

Escape caught in Hancock County

Thirty-two year-old Michael Jordan, who had escaped from the Decatur County Jail on November 19, had a short-lived freedom and was arrested last Friday, November 24.

Thanksgiving dinner is served!

Donetta and Tim Barrett of the Christian International Family Worship Center, on Cavehill Road in Versailles, are enthusiastic about helping out families in need this Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s not that helping out during the holiday season is new to their organization. It’s just that this year CIFWC’s role has changed along with changes made at Family Connections, the community service resource in charge of taking applications for holiday assistance.

Small town gets big bill to fix water problems

The water problems in Napoleon will cost nearly a million dollars to fix. Midwestern Engineers, the firm that did the storm sewer study, submitted the final cost to the Napoleon Town Board at their November meeting.

 

Milan old town hall has appeal

At the regular meeting of the Milan Town Board, held on Monday, November 13, three representatives of Milan groups came before board members to request permission to use the recently vacated town hall.

One family is mourning the loss of four generations following a Sunday morning fire in North Vernon.

Police look for escaped prisoner

According to information from Sgt. Noel Houze Jr. of the Indiana State Police, Versailles Post, two prisoners attempted to escape the Decatur County Jail in Greensburg on Sunday. One was successful - the other was not. Apparently the two managed to get into a common (secured) area unnoticed by the jail officer. When the officer opened a door to an outside area the two were able to run through the doorway. The jailer was able to apprehend one prisoner, but the other one managed to escape.

Holton man assaults wife, father

Ronald W. Druschel 37, of Holton, has been accused of assaulting his wife and his father last Saturday in the early morning hours.

Troops to receive trees for Christmas

Although the climate and terrain is much different in Bahrain than in America, troops stationed there will get the “feel of home” with a live Christmas tree from the states this year. Owners of Sheets Tree Farm located between Osgood and Milan off SR 129, is proud to be a part of the massive effort to literally send thousands of Christmas trees to troops.

Rezone request heard at planning meeting
New CVS store coming to Versailles

CVS will be putting up a new building in Versailles at the intersection of US 50 and US 421, across from McDonald’s. Owners of the properties at the intersection, Roger and Debra Kavanaugh, Rodney and Michelle Sellers and Steven and Carrie Vawter, attended the Ripley County Area Planning Commission meeting on November 7 to request the rezone from Residential-3 to Local Business. The properties on the North of US 50 between High and Adams Streets will be rezoned upon approval of the Versailles Town Council.

Carbon monoxide test offered

The Ripley County Tobacco and Cessation Coalition will provide free carbon monoxide testing in the main hall of the Ripley County Courthouse from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16. This takes only a few seconds. It will show the level of carbon monoxide in your body whether you are a smoker or not. Cold turkey sandwiches will also be served.

Meals won't be delivered at Versailles after December 1

Seniors at the Versailles Senior Center were disappointed to hear that meals served from LifeTime Resources will no longer be available at their location after December 1.

The funeral service of Firefighter Greg Cloud, 33, was a grim reminder to firefighters and their families of the dangers firemen face every time they volunteer to help others.

Day to continue holiday light display

Joe Day didn’t know how construction at the Wye (US 50 and US 421) in Versailles would affect his holiday display. Last year he wasn’t sure if that would be the last time thousands of people would mark their Christmas tradition by coming to see the more than 55,000 lights he strings across his property near that intersection. Motorists anxiously watched for the decorating to begin and on Tuesday of this week, the gigantic words, Merry Christmas, dotted the familiar landscape of the Day property.
