Winners of the DAR Good Citizen and the seventh
grade history essay contests received recognition at the annual
Ross' Run Chapter DAR reception at the Versailles Baptist Family
Life Center on Sunday afternoon, March 7.
Ross' Run Regent Sandy Meisberger and members Judy Kappes,
Cheryl Welch, and Ethel Mathias participated in the afternoon's
program to honor the Ripley County students.
Winners of the history contest, which is chaired by Cheryl
Welch, were Taryn Garrett, first place; Rob Lafary, second;
and Brittany McNeelan, third. All are seventh graders at South
Ripley Jr.-Sr. High School and in Mrs. Nancy Durham's Honors
English class.
Welch also noted that Taryn Garrett had received second place
honors in the state contest. Each of the county winners read
his/her essay for the audience.
DAR Good Citizens for the 2003-2004 school year - Christopher
Bultman, a senior at Jac-Cen-Del High School, and Josh Grossman,
a senior at South Ripley High School - received recognition
from Judy Kappes, chairperson of the Good Citizen contest.
Bultman represented Ripley County in the state contest.
Although the contests are countywide, this year only South
Ripley participated in the history essay
contest and only South Ripley and Jac-Cen-Del in the DAR Good Citizen contest.
Meisberger in her opening comments spoke of the importance
of studying our country's history and the knowledge the students
receive in researching for the essay topic.
Ross' Run DAR members served refreshments to the students,
parents, and teachers in attendance.
