One fatality, one injury, one jailed following
mock accident at JCD School

If the students at Jac-Cen-Del High School had
wondered about the consequences of drinking and driving, then
all of their questions were answered on Tuesday, March 30,
during the mock accident in the back parking lot at the high
school.
The SADD chapter sponsored the mock accident to show the entire
student body what happens during a drunk driving car crash
and the consequences that follow.
Several units from the Ripley County area volunteered for
the mock accident including members of the Indiana State Police,
Ripley County Sheriff's Department, Osgood Police Department,
Osgood Fire Department, Ripley County EMS, Task Unit One, Coroner's
Office and the Ripley County Communications Center.
The units followed normal procedure to cut two
students out of one car and the state police ran a field sobriety
test on
the student that was acting as the drunk driver. Rescue 69 "transported" one
of the injured students and the fire department used the Jaws
of Life to cut the students from the car.
After the crash was over, one student was pronounced dead,
one was taken to the hospital and one to jail. Several speakers
spoke to the students to let them know that although the crash
they saw was fake, it does happen and a lot of the time there
is alcohol involved.
The students acting in the crash were SADD members Amy Fry,
Wes Schmeltz and Daniel Leonetti. Oth
ers that helped were Janice Hosmer and Janet Rohls doing make up; Carl's Automotive
provided the cars; Andrew Vollmer helped with the sound system; Neal's Funeral
Home, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Harmeyer and Ryan Ahlrich were also instrumental in
helping with the mock accident.
The reason for the mock accident is to hopefully keep students
from drinking on prom night, which is this Saturday, April
3. The SADD group will also be having a prom promise signing
Friday morning during school for students to promise to be
drug and alcohol free on prom night.
