Lady Indians pick up two straight victories over conference opponents

Milan girls' softball team picked up two straight victories in their last two games, both of which came in conference play. The Indians defeated the Rising Sun Lady Shiners on Friday then defeated the South Ripley Lady Raiders on Monday with both games being played at home. Both games finished with the final score standing at 3-2 in favor of the Lady Indians. With the two wins the Lady Indians push their record to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

In their game against Rising Sun, Milan scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning with their first two batters crossing home plate. Katie Volz got on base with a double, then scored when Jenna Johnson hit a double. Johnson then scored on a Lauren Ison hit to give the Indians the early 2-0 lead.

Miranda Roberts scored in the top of the second inning after hitting a single and getting batted in by Katie Volz to give the Indians a 3-0 lead.

Rising Sun scored one run in the bottom of the third inning and another run in the bottom of the sixth, but two was all they would get.

Kayla Pennington led the Indians in hitting going 2 for 3 followed by Katie Volz who went 1 for 2 with a
double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Jenna Johnson went 1 for 3 with a double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI.

In their game against South Ripley the Indians jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Kayla Pennington crossed home plate after hitting a double and scoring on a Lauren Ison hit.

South Ripley's Jennifer Rogers tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning after getting walked and scoring on a Holly Toops sacrifice fly. The Raiders then took the lead after Ashley Burress scored making the score 2-1.

The Lady Indians tied the game up in their half of the sixth inning with Pennington doing the scoring again. Going into the final inning the score was tied up at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the seventh inning forcing extra innings. The game continued though 9 innings with the score staying at 2 apiece.

In the bottom of the tenth inning Milan's Katie Volz got on base, stole second and finally scored on a Jenna Johnson hit to end the game at 3-2.

Kayla Teer was the winning pitcher, pitching 8 innings and giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 11 batters and striking out 5. Beth McIntosh came in for Teer and picked up the save, pitching 2 innings and giv
ing up no runs on just 2 hits.

Casey Payne was the losing pitcher, pitching 10 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 2 batters and striking out 5.

Kayla Pennington led the Indians in batting chalking up 2 of the teams 7 hits, going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Jenna Johnson batted 1 for 5 and Lauren Ison went 1 for 4.

The Lady Raiders managed to get just five hits in the game with Tracy Keyes, Danielle Riehle, Chrystal Martin, Eileen Crawford and Holly Toops all getting a hit.

These two teams will meet again on May 12 at South Ripley starting at 4:30 pm.

Raiders pick up fifth straight win in pitchers' duel over Milan

South Ripley's baseball team needed just one run to defeat the Milan Indians in a pitchers' duel Monday night at Milan. The Raiders' Brandon Seabolt scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Mathews in the top of the seventh inning to give the Raiders their fifth straight victory.

The Raiders finished the game with just three hits. Michael Fear got one of the hits going 1 for 4, Scott Hobbs had a hit going 1 for 3 and Brandon Seabolt had the other hit going 1 for 2. Seabolt
also had one stolen base and Izzy Burkett had one stolen base.

The Indians managed to pick up seven hits in the contest. Wes Edwards went 2 for 3 with a double, Terrill Ash went 1 for 3, Buddy Fraasman went 1 for 2, Daniel Fleming batted 1 for 3 and Andy "Bubba" McIntosh went 1 for 1.

Milan's next game is next Monday at Switzerland County starting at 4:30 pm and South Ripley plays again this Saturday in a doubleheader against Austin at Austin. The first game is scheduled to start at 10:00 am.
