South Dearborn graduate Katie Robinson competes for a chance to swim in Olympics

Josh Barnett - Sports Editor

Over 700 swimmers from all over the United States gathered at Long Beach, California to compete in the US Olympics Trials for a chance to compete in the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece as a part of the United States' swimming team on July 7-14.

Among those 700 swimmers was 19 year old South Dearborn graduate, Katie Robinson who just completed her freshman year at the University of Texas.

Robinson was a four year swimmer for the Knights of South Dearborn where she was crowned the state champion six times in the 100 meter freestyle, 100 meter butterfly and the 50 freestyle. As well as six time state champion Robinson also achieved All-American status while in high school. After graduating from high

school she accepted a scholarship to swim at the University of Texas in Austin. While at Texas Robinson competed in any event from 50 to 100 meter freestyle and 100 to 200 buterfly during her freshman year.

Robinson traveled with the rest of the Longhorn Aquatics team, which made the largest team in the trials, to compete for her chance to swim in the Olympics. She competed in the 100 meter butterfly as well as the 200 butterfly.

The first race was the prelims where the top 16 would advance to the semifinals, from which 8 would be taken to the finals and the top two would represent USA in the Olympic on August 13-29. Robinson was unable to make it out of the 200 meter butterfly where she finished 26th in a time of 2:16.44. The 100 meter butterfly was a different story as she managed to swim a personal best 1:01.2 to finish 15th in the prelims and advance to the semifinal round later that evening. In the semifinals

Robinson again swam a personal best of 1:00.99, which pushed her one spot ahead of where she was seeded and she finished 14th, but wasn't able to advance to the finals. "This first time was a huge experience for me," noted Robinson, "It meant a lot to me to be swimming with some of the great swimmers from the United States."

Robinson plans on competing in the 2008 trials again for a chance at the US Olympic team, but until then she is concentrating on her remaining years as a part of the Longhorn's Aquatic Team at the University of Texas. She is currently training for the Senior Nationals, which will be held on August 3-7 at the University of Stanford's campus in Palo Alto, California. "Hopefully in the next four years I will be faster and stronger and will be ready for the trials in 2008."

Katie is the daughter of Harley and Jascia Robinson of Dillsboro.
