Holton Council hires new marshal

Class pictures of Holton students from years gone by will be returned to Holton, where they will be preserved and framed in 16x20 size and placed on a roll-type display.

Holton Town Council members unanimously approved having the pictures restored and placed in the community center. Mike Stratton has been working on the project and brought information to the council at Tuesday night's meeting, September 7, at the new community center.

Stratton said he would be willing to take care of getting the pictures framed and the cost would be about $1,000. "Don't hold me to that exact price, but it will be about that much," he noted.

"Whatever it is we'll reimburse you," noted Council President Robert Furst, who had the full approval of the council. Stratton also reported that he had found a few of the old trophies that belonged to the Holton School and was in the process of getting them. He noted that Dennis Walsh had been cleaning and fixing the trophies that were damaged. There was also an Honor Roll of WWII veterans that will be brought to the center. This needs some repair.

Recently hired town marshal Billey Moore was in attendance at the meeting and gave his activity report for the time he has been employed. Moore was officially sworn in on August 12.
Moore requested the town adopt or create its own Standard Operating Procedure policy for the police department. He was told to check with the sheriff's department or other towns and bring something before the council for approval.

The council complimented Moore on the job he is doing so far and how quickly he responded to the need for traffic control at a recent funeral.

In other business:

· Letters will be sent to those owning junk cars requesting they be removed.

· The council will check on purchasing a sweeper attachment for the town's tractor for the streets.

· The council will check with Attorney Larry Eaton and then send letters to those who have condemned properties due to the recent tornado letting them know how much time they have to clean up or tear down those structures. The council noted they want to be reasonable, but have to set a date.

· Discussion was held on the possibility of having a Halloween Parade with prizes for various costume categories.

· The final reading of the 2004 budget was heard.

· Discussion was held on getting a phone installed at the community center. Council member Rick Holman had researched getting a pay phone, which the council felt was too costly.

He reported it would cost $275.00 for installation and $75.00 per month after that.

· Park Caretaker Wilbur Myers reported he needed fertilizer for the park before winter. He also noted a new cover for the electric box was needed along with the repair of a leaky faucet.

President Robert Furst, Council
members Wilma Myers and Rick Holman and Clerk-Treasurer Velma Stickelman were in attendance at the meeting, along with Wilbur Myers, Billey Moore, and Mike Stratton.

The next regularly scheduled meeting for the council is scheduled for October 5, at 6:00 p.m. in the community center located on Versailles Street.
