SR High School designates Red Cross Week

Remembering the thousands of families suffering
from hurricane damage the past month, South Ripley Jr.-Sr.
High School teachers and students decided to help by naming
this week - October 4-8 - "American Red Cross Week."
Ripley County's Red Cross Director Sandy Vanderbur visited
the school on Tuesday and was interviewed by Sarah Bauman for
CNN/SR in a live telecast to inform the South Ripley audience
of the ways the American Red Cross assists disaster victims.
Vanderbur explained that the most recent disaster in this
county was the tornado that damaged property in the Holton
area. The Red Cross, however, works year round to raise funds
that will help victims all over the country as well as in areas
where our troops are located.
Initiated by Teacher Donna Perry, who was looking for community
service projects for her students, the Red Cross drive spread
throughout the school. On Monday, Mrs. Perry's and Mrs. Nancy
Durham's senior English classes sponsored a bake sale.
Yesterday (Wednesday), the seniors in Mrs. Karen Hafft's English
class provided food for the second bake sale. Tomorrow (Friday)
members of the Student Council and Mrs. Belinda Mockbee's Current
Events class will have the third bake sale of the week.
Announcements by Principal Bill Snyder informed students of
the Red Cross Week projects and also that a donation box was
available in the main office for any other contribu
tions.
"Our goal is to raise $500 for the hurricane victims," said
Mrs. Perry, who added that a check for the total amount would
be presented to Director Vanderbur on Monday, October 11.
