Sunman Town Council discusses parking issue
Cathy May - Contributing Writer

Marshal Mark Denny would like to toughen up the fines for parking in a handicapped space and violating the two-hour parking limit in the business district. Currently, the town has no law in place regarding fines for handicapped violators and only a $1.00 fine for those who break the two-hour limit. Sunman Town Attorney Jack Kellerman will draft an ordinance making the fine for violations $15.00.

Council discussed the need for an ordinance to ban street level apartments. In a previous meeting with landlords on October 13, council said they were looking into this ordinance in order to make the downtown area more attractive. Attorney Kellerman is looking into the ordinance and the proper terminology.

Marshal Denny reported the Ford is in need of a light bar and will cost $609.99. The town agreed to purchase one. The marshal then introduced new Reserve Officer Steve Livers.

Two submitted grant applications have been acknowledged. The grant to the Rising Sun Regional Foundation is for the storm water drainage behind Raintree Terrace. The town should know in mid December if it received the grant. Also, they heard from the Indiana Rural Development Council on the grant for the sewer line extension to Penntown. They have $4.2 million to grant out and over $17 million in requests.

Council decided to contribute $1,000 twice a year to their Quality of Life Fund with the Ripley County Community Foundation.

Paul Rosemeyer will address the mildew situation and paint the back hallway and one lower level room in the Sunman Town Hall for $735.00.

All three board members attended the meeting: Wayne Jenner, John Campbell, and Mike Wolffe. Also present to advise the board were Attorney Jack Kellerman, and Clerk-Treasurer Kris Schneider. The next meeting of the Sunman Town Board will be November 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the new Sunman Town Hall.
