Darla Copeland, 37, of Versailles, a former Versailles postal employee, was sentenced in federal court on November 5, on theft charges.

According to information from the U.S. District Federal Court, Copeland was sentenced to three years probation, two months at a community treatment facility, and four months of home detention. She will also be serving 100 hours of community service and pay a special assessment fine of $100.00.

A grand jury indicted Copeland on February 24, of this year, after hearing evidence that she had taken money from envelopes being mailed when she was employed as a mail carrier with the Versailles Post Office between April 2003 and October 2003.

Copeland's initial hearing following the indictment was March 24, and according to Ripley Publishing files, in an article that was published March 30, she was to have a trial on April 19. That trial date was postponed several times, with the final sentencing taking place last Friday, November 5.
