Indians 'Fear'less against South Ripley Raiders' Michael Fear drops 18 to help SR defeat Milan

Josh Barnett - Sports Editor

Milan's varsity basketball team was fearless last Friday night, which is what made them lose to the South Ripley Raiders. Usually being fearless isn't a bad thing, but for the Raiders it paid off to have fear, Michael Fear that is. The sophomore standout Fear scored a team high 18 points to help lead South Ripley to a 72-59 win over Milan on the road. He also finished with a team high 4 assists. With the win the Raiders push their record to 7-5 on the season while the Indians' record falls to 1-10.

The Raiders opened the game with an 8-0 run to set the tone early. Jacob Lemon scored the first four points and Tony Lloyd helped out by scoring the other
4. From there the Indians battled back and cut the lead to just 2, before the Raiders scored again at the end of the quarter. After one quarter of play SR was leading 16-12.

South Ripley went on another run to start the second quarter pushing their advantage to 13 at 25-12 before the Indians scored with about 2:30 gone off the clock to end the run. The Raiders pushed their advantage to 14 about midway through the quarter, but again the Indians battled back. Milan closed out the quarter with a 11-4 run to cut the lead to seven at 38-31.

Milan cut the lead to five early in the third quarter, but it was the closest they would get. South Ripley pushed their lead back to 9 by the end of the third and went up by as many as 20 in the fourth before the final
buzzer sounded and the Raiders won by 13.

Following Fear's 18 points were Michael Mathews, Jacob Lemon and Tony Lloyd all scoring 12 points each. Lloyd finished with his third straight double-double grabbing 10 rebounds to go with his 12 points.

Derek Pennington led Milan with 24 points and 11 rebounds followed by Derek Pennington with 18 points and Kyle George with 11.

Both teams play again this Friday with the Raiders playing at home against Lawrenceburg, which will be their Homecoming, and the Indians will be on the road against Southwestern-Hanover. Both games are scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.

Jac-Cen-Del's varsity basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Friday night on the road against Shawe. The Eagles fell to the Hilltoppers 44-43 to make their record 9-1 on the season.

Only five players for the Eagles scored in the contest with just two hitting double-digits. Tyler Einhaus led the way with 15 points followed by Adam Peetz with 14, Kyle Horan and Justin Huff with 6 apiece and Chip Schuler with 2. Shawe's Drew Kring led all scorers with 22 points.

JCD wasn't able to put a lot of points on the board, being held under double-digits in the first quarter with just 9 points. They added 10 in the second to take a one point lead going into halftime. The 19 first half points was a season low for JCD.

The third quarter wasn't any different as the Eagles managed just 10 more points, giving up the lead to the Hilltoppers 12 points in the quarter. Going into the fourth quarter Shawe was leading 30-29.
Both teams scored evenly in the fourth quarter added 14 points each to give the advantage to Shawe and giving JCD their first loss of the season.

The next night after suffering their first loss the Eagles played another road game, this time against the Union County Patriots. Fortunately for JCD they were able to bounce back from the loss and grab their tenth victory of the season. With the 63-51 win the Eagles push their record to 10-1 on the season.

Again just two Eagles managed to score in double-digits, but Tyler Einhaus' 25 points helped spark them to victory.

The Eagles grabbed an early first quarter lead outscoring their opponent 17-10 but blew it in the second when their 11 points were doubled by the Patriots. Going into halftime Union County was leading 32-28.

JCD's defense held Union County to just 19 second half points, 6 in the third quarter, as they were able to hold the Patriots off and grab the 12 point win.

Following Einhaus' 25 points was Adam Peetz with 12. Peetz finished the game with a double grabbing 10 rebounds to go with his 12 points and had a team high 6 blocks.

The Eagles play again this Friday, starting a span of five straight home games, against Oldenburg. That game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.
