Lady Eagles' season comes to an end with 45-32 loss to Hauser in Regional Tournament

Josh Barnett - Sports Editor

The Lady Eagles' season came to an end when they fell to the Hauser Lady Jets in the second game of the first round of the Regional Tournament at Southwestern-Shelby last Saturday. Jac-Cen-Del fell to the Lady Jets by a score of 45-32. The Lady Eagles finish their season with a record of 14-9 and were crowned Sectional #58 Champions and placed second in the ORVC and the Ripley County Tournament.

Two major factors led to the Eagles' demise in their game against the Jets, they were outrebounded 30-17 and they shot a staggering 20.8% from the field (14.3% from three pointer). Of the 30 rebounds they gave up to the Jets, 15 were offensive. Neither team could take care of the ball either as they both finished with 19 turnovers.

Jac-Cen-Del struggled to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter falling behind 7-0. Abby Rohlfing finally broke the scoreless streak when she hit a field goal to make the score 7-2. From that point the Eagles finished the quarter on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to one at 10-9.

Hauser held the Eagles to just three points in the second quarter as they pushed their lead to 9 before the end of the half. Going into the locker room the Lady Eagles were trailing 21-12.

JCD's scoring woes continued in the third quarter as they were held to just two points on no field goals in the entire quarter. Their only points came when Janelle Hardesty hit two free-throws to give them 14 points. Hauser didn't score a lot in the quarter but still managed to push their lead to 15 at 29-15 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was the only quarter the Lady Eagles managed to outscore the Jets but it was too little too late. JCD's 18 points in the fourth pushed their total to 32 points for the game.

Janelle Hardesty was the only Eagle to score in double-digits with 10 points. She also had a team high 3 assists. Abby Rohlfing was second on the scoring list with 9 points followed by Emily Einhaus with 7, Traci Siebert with 4 and Erika Simon with 2. Cassidy Krieg led the team with 4 rebounds and Alisha Lord had a team high 2 steals.

"Of course we're disappointed in the outcome of the game today, but I told the kids that the loss is only a bad thing if we don't learn something from it," said JCD Coach Scott Smith, "The kids had a great year, winning back-to-back Sectionals and finishing second in the conference. We have to take this loss and use it to build upon for next year, it's the only way."

South Ripley boys' basketball team suffers two straight losses in close contests

Josh Barnett - Sports Editor

South Ripley's boys varsity basketball suffered two disappointing losses this weekend. Their first loss came on the road against Rising Sun 59-52 and their second loss was at home against Greensburg 60-59. With the two losses their record falls to 10-9 on the season.

Although the Raiders out rebounded the Shiners 38 to 25 and gave up just two offensive rebounds they weren't able to pick up the road conference victory.

The Raiders jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, going up by as many as 10 points before ending the quarter with a 15-7 lead. The Shiners battled back in the second quarter and cut the lead to as close as three points. Some late free-throws helped the Raiders push their advantage to 7 before the end of the half.

Rising Sun battled back again in the third quarter scoring 19 points and cutting the lead to just one point. Going into the fourth quarter the Raiders were barely holding on to a 44-43 lead. The Shiners outscored the Raiders 16-8 in the fourth quarter to grab the 59-52 victory.

Three Raiders scored in double-digits in the contest with Tyler Ester leading the way with 12 followed by Jacob Lemon and Michael Mathews with 10 each. Lemon and Brandon Seabolt led the Raiders with 9 rebounds apiece. Seabolt also had a team high 6 assists.

In their game against Greensburg the Raiders honored their seniors by holding their annual senior night. Senior Tony Lloyd stepped up his game for his last home game as a Raider. He led his team with a double-double performance with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Unfortunately for Lloyd and the other senior basketball players they lost their last home game to the Pirates.

Lloyd scored the Raiders' first four points of the contest to keep the score close. The two teams traded buckets with Greensburg building up a five point lead at one point in the quarter. At the end of the first the Pirates were leading 13-10.

In the second quarter Greensburg pushed their advantage to six early. South Ripley battled back and took over the lead when Lloyd hit a field goal to give the Raiders a 22-21 advantage. From there the Pirates went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead. By the end of the first half Greensburg was leading 31-24.

South Ripley was able to cut into the lead again in the third quarter until Michael Fear hit a three-pointer with about 1:30 left in the quarter to tie the game up at 41 apiece. Fear hit another shot with under :30 left to push the Raiders in front. Going into the fourth quarter South Ripley was leading 43-41.

In the fourth quarter the two teams scored back and fourth to start the quarter. South Ripley was trailing by just two points with just under 3:00 left to play but the Pirates went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 8 with just :40 left to play. Tyler Ester hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to five. A G'burg free-throw pushed the lead back to 6 at 59-53 with under :30 left in the game. Tony Lloyd hit a field goal followed by a free-throw to cut the lead down to three. Another Pirate free-throw pushed the lead back to 4. Michael Fear hit a three-pointer with :07 seconds to cut the lead to one, but the Raiders wouldn't get anymore chances as the Pirates escaped with a one point victory.

Following Lloyd's 17 points was Michael Fear with 13, Brandon Seabolt with 12 and Tyler Ester with 11. Michael Mathews and Seabolt led the team with 6 assists apiece.

The Raiders will wrap up their regular season this Friday on the road against Jac-Cen-Del. That game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm with the JV playing first.
