South Ripley avenges 38 point loss to JCD with 58-56 win over the Eagles

Josh Barnett - Sports Editor

South Ripley's varsity basketball team went into last Friday's game at Jac-Cen-Del with one thing to prove; they weren't the same team that lost the Eagles by 38 points in the first game of the season, and they did just that. In the two teams' final regular season game, in front of a capacity crowd in JCD's home gym the South Ripley Raiders handed the Eagles just their second loss of the season with a 58-56 upset.

The Raiders were in complete control in the first quarter, going up by as many as 10 points, but struggled in the second quarter and ended the first half in a tie. In the second half the two teams remained close with the
Raiders holding on to a four point lead going into the fourth quarter. South Ripley had a one point lead with under :20 left to play and JCD had the ball. The Raiders forced a turnover and Tony Lloyd hit a free-throw with just over a second to play to make the final score 58-56.

The game opened up with the two teams scoring back and forth until South Ripley ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 15-10 lead.

Michael Fear hit a field goal to start the second quarter giving the Raiders their largest lead of the game at 10 points. Adam Peetz hit two straight three-pointers to spark a 9-0 run allowing JCD to cut the lead to just three points. The Raiders held on to the lead, never going ahead by more than four points, until the final seconds of the half when Tyler Einhaus drained a three-pointer to tie the game up at 25 apiece to end the half.

Peetz hit a field goal in the early seconds of the third quarter to give the Eagles their first lead of the game since leading 1-0. The lead didn't last long as the Raiders' Tony Lloyd hit two straight field goals to tie the game
at 29-29. The Raiders outscored the Eagles 18-14 to end the quarter with a 4 point lead. Going into the fourth quarter the Raiders were leading 47-43.

Brandon Seabolt hit a field goal to push the Raiders' advantage to 6 early in the fourth quarter. JCD's Tyler Einhaus hit a three to cut the lead back to three followed by an Adam Peetz free-throw and another Einhaus field goal to tie the game at 49 apiece. The two teams traded the lead back and forth one more time before the Raiders grabbed a lead they wouldn't lose. Lloyd hit a field goal with just over 2:30 left to play to push SR's lead to three points. On the other end of the court Peetz hit a field goal to cut the lead back down to one point. Trailing by one point with under a minute left to play the Eagles had a chance to take the lead, but Peetz missed a free-throw attempt forcing JCD to foul. Lloyd missed two straight free-throws giving JCD one more chance with just :16 left in the game. On their last attempt the Eagles turned the ball over with under :02 left on the clock, forcing the
Eagles to foul again. Lloyd stepped to the line, hit the first free-throw and missed the second allowing the time to run out and give the Raiders the two-point victory.

Both team's big men played stellar games with Adam Peetz leading all scorers with 26 points and Tony Lloyd leading his team with 22 points.

Two other Raiders scored in double-digits with Michael Fear scoring 15 and Tyler Ester chipping in 11. Lloyd and Jacob Lemon led the Raiders with 9 rebounds apiece. Brandon Seabolt had a team high 7 assists.

Only one other Eagle scored in double-digits. Tyler Einhaus finished the game with 10 points. Following Einhaus was Andrew Huntington with 6 points and Justin Huff with 5. Einhaus led the team with 8 rebounds and 6 assists and Peetz finished with a team high 5 blocks.

Both team's open sectional play tonight (Tuesday) with JCD playing at home against Oldenburg and the Raiders playing at Lawrenceburg against Milan in the second game.

Chris Swisher, Milan High School 2001 graduate and Indiana State Champion in the 1600 meter, continues his running success as a member of the Miami University Redhawks.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Swisher of Milan, Chris finished a close second for his team on Friday, February 18, in the Indiana University Hoosier Hills Classic. Last Friday, February 25, he competed at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, but results were unavailable at press time.

At the Hoosier Hills Invitational, the Redhawks recorded nine top-three finishers in the 16 events. For Swisher it was the first meet indoors, and he finished second in the 3000-meter race closely behind his teammate David Mitchell. Swisher had
led for more than 2000 meters before Mitchell closed the gap and went ahead.

As a senior, Chris has competed in running events throughout his college career. This year the Miami Redhawks will prepare for the outdoor season by traveling to Irvine, California, on Saturday, March 26, to run in the UC Irvine Invitational.

Their schedule calls for them to compete in several Ohio meets, to travel to Pennsylvania for the Penn Relays, and to return to I.U. for the Indiana Invitational on Friday, May 6.

After the MAC championships in Athens, Ohio, on May 13,14, the Miami track team will participate in the NCAA Regionals at Bloomington and hope to travel to Sacramento, California, June 10-11 for the NCAA championships.
