This
is Rusty Wallace's last full year
in Nextel Cup Racing. He was the
1989 Series Champion. Rusty is
hanging up his helmet to be with
his family,
and work on his son Steven's racing
career. He wants to take it a little
easier from the busy schedule,
which was getting to be too much
for him.
Rusty said it was wearing him out.
He did say that he wasn't closing
the door on racing forever, he
would like to do something on television
that still keeps him involved with
racing, like broadcasting.
Rusty
tested at the Kentucky Speedway
on Tuesday, May 31 with his 64
Busch test car. Rusty owns the
Busch car
and shares the ride with Jeremy
Mayfield, Jamie McMurray, and has
also hired
Bill Elliott. With conflicting
schedules, Rusty decided to run
the Kentucky
Speedway race himself, so he
was practicing
on the track.
Rusty
went on to say that he thinks it's
a mystery
why the Kentucky
Speedway doesn't have a Nextel
Cup Race. He
said, "Kentucky has a good
track."
Rusty,
along with his brother Kenny, met
with the
media to
answer questions
and talk about the upcoming
Busch Nascar. On June 18 the "Meijer
300 Presented by Oreo" will
be held at the Kentucky Speedway.
Along with drivers Michael
Waltrip, Carl Edwards, and
Greg Biffle,
Rusty and Kenny both say this
should be
a good race and they are looking
forward to it.
Kyle
Busch was last year's race winner
in
front of a record
crowd
of 72,312
fans in attendance. This
year, drivers will compete for
the
share of a $1,335,989
pot, the richest purse in
Kentucky Speedway history.
The
Speedway weekend opens Friday,
June 17 with the
Nascar AutoZone
Elite Division Southeast
Series. The "Insight
Communications 150" will
be run at 8:00 p.m. For
