Versailles Raiders split double-header with Madison Legion

Versailles Legion Post 173 played the Madison Legion baseball team in a double-header on Saturday, June 18 starting at 3:00 pm in Versailles.

The teams split the double-header with Madison winning the first game 7-2. Versailles took the second game with a score of 14-7.

In the first game Tim Burcham pitched all seven innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits, with only two walks.

Versailles got their only two runs on a double by Scott Hobbs in the fifth inning. The team had five hits in the game. Hobbs went 2 for 3 batting, and Blake Richmond was 1 for 3. Versailles lost the game by a final score of 7-2.

In the second game of the double-header B.J. Sieverding pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walking three. Thomas Welch pitched the final two innings, allowing four runs on two hits, walking three.

Daniel Leonetti went 1 for 2 with a two-run homerun and walked twice. Blake Billman was 2 for 3 with a ground rule double. Eric Landwehr was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. Andy Hartley was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI's. Jared Keck also had two hits in the game. Versailles won the second game by a final score of 14-7.

The team's next game will be tonight, June 23 at 6:00pm against the Seymour Legion. They will play on Saturday, June 25 at Batesville, then on Sunday they will travel to South Dearborn for a doubleheader.

SR Softball Athletes honored

An informal gathering was held for all varsity and reserve players and coaches on Friday, June 3 in the South Ripley High School cafeteria.

The Mental Attitude Award for the reserve team was given to Sally Adams. Receiving certificates of participation for the reserve team were Sally Adams, Jenna Brown, Audrey Ganahl, Ashley Hollandsworth, Megan Linkmeyer, and Molly Walls.

Varsity athletes receiving letter certificates were Ashley Burress, Erica Burress, Eileen Crawford, Courtney Fancher, Kristen Huss, Tracy Keyes, Abbey Lemon, Chrystal Martin, Casey Payne, Jennifer Roberts, Amanda Smith, Holly Toops, Bethany Vaughn, Alisha Simon, Sierra Groves, and Ashley Thomas.

Holly Toops was awarded the Senior Scholastic Award for having a 4.0 GPA. The Mental Attitude Award was given to Jenny Roberts, a senior outfielder. Erica Burress, a sophomore, was given the Most Improved Player award.

Casey Payne, a senior, was the Outstanding Pitcher for the Raiders. She faced 659 batters, had a 3.08 ERA, .221 on base average, 10 wins and 11 losses. Payne set a new school record recording 152 strikeouts on the season. She also made the All-Conference Team.

The Outstanding Defense award went to senior catcher Tracy Keyes. She recorded a .979 fielding average with only four errors all season. She had 162 put outs in 154 innings of play.

Kristen Huss was the Leading Offensive Player for the team with a .357 batting average. She had 20 hits on the season, including 6 doubles.

The Raiders finished the season with a record of 11-13, and a 6-6 conference record. The highlight of their season was defeating the undefeated Switzlerand County Pacers in the Lawrenceburg Sectional.
