Osgood residents plan for celebration
Cathy May - Contributing Writer

The Osgood 2006 committee is busy making plans for the town's sesquicentennial celebration next year. About 25 community members met on November 7. They meet the first Monday of every month and have been working on the event for several years already.

The main celebration will take place from August 31 to September 3 of 2006, over the Labor Day holiday. Activities will take place in three locations: at the Ripley County Fairgrounds Park in Osgood, the Jac-Cen-Del school grounds and downtown along the brick street.

Lots of local clubs and organizations are taking part in the festivities. The Osgood Lions Club is in charge of the parade. The Ripley County Chamber will have a 5K Walk-Run. The Osgood Civil Club is sponsoring a sky diver.

There will be a queen contest, a prince and princess contest and a baby contest. Several tournaments will be held including softball, horse shoe and corn hole. About 400 re-enactors are expected to set up a living history at the Fairgrounds Park.

Booths and art display, a spiritual night, music, entertainment, a tractor pull and a car show are just a few more activities planned. They are working on bringing in the Budweiser Clydesdales, but they won't commit until two months before the event.

The Committee has several souvenir items for sale to help finance some of the activities. Plates and postcards have the 2006 logo on them designed by Branden Smart. There are also coffee mugs and T-shirts available from several Osgood merchants. John Stork, who is in charge of the souvenirs said, "They would make wonderful Christmas gifts." A history book of the town will also be available for $20.00.

Chairman of the 2006 committee, Jerry Volmer said, "How pleasing it's been to see the number of people who have gotten involved. It will still take many more volunteers to help with the event." The group meets again on December 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School Library. All interested persons are invited to attend.
