Lady Raiders battle - but fall short

On Saturday night, November 19, Tyson gym in Versailles was the site for varsity girls' basketball games between the South Ripley Lady Raiders and the East Central Lady Trojans. Though at times the battle was quite intense, when the final horn blew, the Lady Trojans were victors by the score of 48-42.

The opening tip was controlled by the Lady Trojans, but a steal by Lady Raider Abbey Lemon led to a basket by Beth Thieman giving the Raiders the first points. The Trojans tied the game when Danielle Clark sank two free throws at the 5:50 mark. Lady Raider Ciara Mcguire scored for 4-2 and again Trojan Clark scored knotting the game at 4.

A Josie Franklin pass threaded to Kristen Huss for a pair put the Lady Raiders back on top 6-4. The first quarter ended in a tie at 6 as Lady Trojan Jessica Scholle scored at the buzzer.

In the second quarter, the Trojans took a 2 point lead that was quickly tied by Raider Huss' shot for a score of 8-8. A Thieman 3 point basket put the Raiders up 11-8, followed by her 2 point bucket giving the Raiders a margin of 13-8. Relatively soon, a Kellie Collier pass to Alex Snyder for two put the Raiders at near double the score over the Trojans at 15-8 with 3:10 left in the half.

Trojan Emily Stuerenberg scored for a 15-10 count. Lady Raider McGuire gave the Raiders a 17-10 lead, but as time was running out, Lady Trojan Hillary Thomas scored, leaving the score at half time, SR17 to EC12.

In the third quarter, Raider McGuire scored a 3 point shot, 20-12. Raider Huss added two for 22-12. At 5:19 left in the 3rd, Trojan Clark made a free throw for 22-13.

Lady Trojan Scholle added two, drawing to within seven points of the Raiders. Raider Thieman scored two for 24-15 at the 4:19 mark.

Lady Trojan Thomas drilled a 3 point shot for 24-18 and in the 46 seconds between 2:46 and 2:00, the Raiders spent 3 time-outs as things were quickly unraveling. Scoring for the balance of the quarter: Raider McGuire -1, Stratton -2. Trojan Stuerenberg -2, and Thomas -2, taking the score at the end of 3 quarters, SR27 to EC 23.

Fourth quarter scoring was by Lady Raiders Lemon 4, McGuire 2, and Mann 2. Trojan scoring: Clark 6, Thomas 2, Stuerenberg 2 and Kari Sivalti 1, to tie the game at 38 sending it into over time.

In the four minute overtime, Trojan scoring was by Thomas 4, Stuerenberg 2, and Sivalti 2. Three Raiders, Snyder 1, McGuire 1, and Mann 2 completed the scoring for the game with EC winning 48-42.
