150th celebration plans made at Sunman
Cathy May - Contributing Writer
The town of Sunman continues to plan their 150th
birthday party next year. Kris Schneider gave an update to
the Sunman Town Board. August 26 is the date for a Civil War
re-enactment and encampment at the park. September 1 will be
the queen contest and beard judging. September 2 will see the
parade at noon. A flag raising and unveiling of a monument
will take place at 1:30 p.m. David Deyer will give walking
tours of the town. The event will coincide with the Sunman
Wine and Fireworks Festival.
The Sesquicentennial Committee will be applying to the Rising
Sun Regional Foundation for a grant to purchase banners, hanging
flowers and promotional materials. The town will act as the
fiscal agent for the Sesquicentennial Committee.
Sunman town board member, John Campbell, said the
local dogcatcher Dale Ellinghausen notified him that county animal
control officer
Jim Lovins was told by County Commissioner Chuck Folz that
after January 1 he was no longer to pick up animals from the
town of Sunman. This is due to their new ordinance that implements
a $2.00 registration fee for cats and dogs. The board challenged
that decision and Attorney Jack Kellerman will look into the
matter.
Roger Lang was reappointed to the Ripley County
Planning and Zoning Board. Lang reported he feels it's time for
members
of the town board to go before the Dearborn County Sewer District
and tell them some of their residents are ready to join our
system now. He also asked for Marshal Denny's assistance in
controlling trespassers on the American Legion property.
A public hearing was held on the Community Development Fund
grant. There was no public comment. The grant is being sought
to help the town purchase the building the town is using as
a town hall. There still needs to be 57 more surveys completed.
Marshal Denny volunteered to get residents to sign the surveys.
Kris Schneider said the audit is complete and the
exit interview will be held in January. The end of the year meeting
will be held
on Wednesday, December 28 at 6:30 p.m. It is open to the public.
All three board members attended the meeting: Wayne Jenner,
John Campbell and Mike Wolffe. Also present to advise the board
were Town Attorney Jack Kellerman and Clerk-Treasurer Kris
Schneider. The next regular meeting of the Sunman Town board
will be January 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sunman Town Hall.
