Indy Scecina Crusaders attack the tribe

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

On Dec, 27, Milan High School Basketball presented a contest between their Indians and the Indianapolis Scecina Memorial Crusaders with the Crusaders victorious 60-54.

The game held over Christmas break did not attract the number of basketball enthusiasts one might expect, however, of the limited number in attendance one could quickly identify supporters of other local schools teams hungry for action.

The tip off to start the game at mid-court found Indian senior David McIntosh controlling. An Indian turnover gave the ball to Scecina, they in turn followed with a turnover themselves. Following a missed Indian scoring attempt, the Crusaders taking the rebound drew first blood.

Settling down into the game at hand, the Crusaders' 6'1" senior, Scott Miller put the FG in for a 2-0 lead. Indian senior David McIntosh tied the game with a FG, 2-2. Ross Erlenbaugh, a 6'4" Crusader senior, advanced the score to 4-2. Indian McIntosh drained a three to give the tribe a short lived lead in the contest at 5-4.

Crusaders' Erlenbaugh scoring a FG and Miller drilling the 3 pointer and a FG for a 7 point run, took the score to 11-5 Scecina. Indian McIntosh made 1 of 2 FT's and followed his miss for a put back FG to the score of 11-8. The Crusaders added 7 points from FG's by Brian Alspaugh, and Tim Kingsley, and a 3 pointer by J.J. Cunningham. Kyle George of the Indians countered with a 3 point score to leave the final score after the first quarter Scecina 18 to Milan 11.

McIntosh opened the second quarter with 5 off a 3 point shot and a FG, and Justin Guedel of Scecina dropped a FG in for a score of 20-16

The balance of the Indian scoring for the quarter came from Kyle George, Brandon Montooth, and Derek Pennington, each adding a FG. The Crusaders scoring in the second quarter came at the hands of Miller with 3 FG's and Isiah Dotson with 2 FG's. The score at the half time break, Scecina 29-23 Milan.

The Indians would only add three scores in the third quarter. Scoring for the tribe were McIntosh and Josh Schwanholt with a FG each and Bryant Withers with a FG and a FT.

The Crusaders added 14 points in the third, those points coming off a FG each by Erlenbaugh, Miller, and Dotson. Alspaugh added a 3 point shot and a FG, and Vince Okerson with a FG also made 1 of 2 FT's.

Going into the fourth quarter with the score Scecina 43 and Milan 30, the Indians had their work cut out for them just to get back into the game let alone win it.

Indian scoring in the fourth came from Terry Moore and Pennington with a FG each, Jeremy Hunt with 2 - 3 pointers, hitting 3 of 4 FT's, Kyle George with a FG, a 3 point shot and hitting 1 of 2 FT's, McIntosh added a FG with the FT conversion, and Randy Kirk 2/2 FT's.

Scecina's scoring in the fourth was by Dotson with a FG and 2 of 2 FT's, Miller a FG and 1 of 2 FT's, Erlenbaugh added 1 of 2 FT attempts, Okerson scored 2/2 FT's, Kingsley scored 1 of 2 FT's, Cunningham scored 3 of 3 FT's, Guedel made 2 of 6 FT attempts, and Alspaugh put in 1 of 2 FT attempts.

The final varsity game score was Scecina 60-54 Milan.
