County Commissioners make 2006 appointments

The Ripley County Commissioners made several appointments for 2006 at their final meeting of 2005 on December 30. Kenneth Krieg, assistant building inspector was reappointed. He will be taking over the duties of Ron Duebber as building inspector on a temporary basis until a replacement can be found.

Kaye Hunger was reappointed to the Ripley County Area Planning Commission. Maureen Sheets will be the Commissioners' appointment on the Board of Zoning Appeals from the Planning Commission. Another appointment to the Board of Zoning Appeals will be made at the Commissioners meeting on January 13.

Neil Comer will continue to serve as county attorney; Andrew Clark as veteran's officer; Jim Lovins as dog warden; and Scott Huffman as EMS director. Maintenance and housekeeping will remain the same: Gene Bishop, Rebecca Mullins and June Branson.

Highway Department appointments include: Owen Heaton Jr., superintendent; Robert Bales, District 1 foreman; Tony Mayberry, district 2, foreman; Ray Toops, district 3 foreman; Pat Kissell, garage foreman; Gerald Johnson, bridge crew foreman and Eudora Henthorn, bookkeeper.

Lawrence Nickell will represent the Commissioners on the Jefferson Proving Ground Board. Bob Reiners was again elected president of the Ripley County Commissioners.

Scott Huffman presented contracts from the four county EMS squads for 2006 to be signed. Dr. David Welch was reappointed as Ripley County Health Officer, a position he has held since 1991.

Barns and Thornburg was retained as 2006 Lobbyists for the State at $2,500 a month for four months. A check for $98,900.91 was received from the treasurer of Ohio County for third quarter riverboat admission fees. This will be shared with the incorporated towns.

The commissioners held bid openings for Bridge Inspections. There were four companies who responded. The matter was taken under advisement.

All bids were accepted for stone. Dave O'Mara received the bid for Bituminous 16,000 tons laid at $30.45. All other bituminous material bids were accepted. Raver Concrete's bid for concrete was accepted. John Retzner was the low bidder for gasoline and diesel fuel.

The auditor received a notice that the gas price had doubled. Heat will be turned off in the entrances to the courthouse. A water heater was replaced in the Probation Department. A new pump and motor have been replaced in the elevator in the courthouse. This is at no cost; it is part of the upkeep service.

All three commissioners were in attendance: President Robert Reiners, Chuck Folz and Lawrence Nickell. Attorney Neil Comer was present to advise the Commissioners. Deputy Auditor Amber May attended to take minutes of the meeting. The next Commissioner's meeting will be Friday, January 13 at 8:00 a.m. at the Commissioner's Room at the Ripley County Courthouse Annex.
