96th IHSAA Boys' Basketball Sectional underway

The road to Conseco Fieldhouse has once again been charted by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. The field in opening consisted of 393 teams, 5,626 participants, to compete among the 64 selected Sectional sites. Sectional #56, the Lapel sites competition got underway on Monday night, February 27, due to a 9 team field, with the majority of sites opening on Tuesday, February 28. Sectional play continues through Saturday, March 4, with a two-round Regional slated for Saturday, March 11. One game Semi-State's are set for Saturday, March 18, with the winners earning a spot in the State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 25. In all, 389 games will be played over the four week period.

At the State Finals, there will be a championship game in each of the four classes beginning with Class 1A at 10:36 a.m. EST, followed immediately by the Class 2A game. After a mid-afternoon break, the second session will begin with the Class 3A championship game at 6:06 p.m. EST, followed by the Class 4A championship game.
SECTIONAL #44, Class 2A

Indians took a time-out with 1:49 remaining in the half. Indian Withers scored a FG following the time-out, and teammate George made 3/3 FT shots, drawing the score to a 3 point difference at 29-26 where it remained at quarter's end.

The Indians captured the lead early in the third quarter off George and McIntosh FG's. With the score Indians 30-29 Rebels, Southwestern called for a time-out. Following the time-out, events beyond the Indians' control went quickly south. Rebel McVey scored a FG, Stephens drained the 3, McVey added a 3, and Thomasson 2/2 FT's to take the score to Rebels 39-30 Indians at the 2:16 mark. Indian Kirk lit up the net for a 3, but Rebel Andrews answered with a pair of 3's to edge the margin yet greater. Following a Milan time-out, Rebel McVey scored a pair of FT's taking the game to a 14 point spread, ending the quarter Rebels 47-33 Indians.

Scoring in the fourth continued to be friendly to the Rebels as they outscored the tribe 12-6. Rebel scoring came from Andrews with a FG and 5 FT's, McVey 2 FG's and a FT. Indian scoring was from a Pennington FG, Jeremy Hunt's 2/2 FT shooting, and a George FG, ending the game with the score of 59-39, the Indians' season over, and the Rebels allowed to move forward for Friday night's first game.
SECTIONAL #58, Class 1A

Game One

Sectional #58 opened on Tuesday evening, February 28, at South Decatur High School, with competition between the South Decatur Cougars and the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles. The Eagles at game's end were victorious, 64-51, advancing them to the second game on Friday, March 3, against the Oldenburg Academy Twisters. The opening game at 6:00 p.m. pits the Shawe Memorial Hilltoppers against the Rising Sun Shiners.
