An accident on US 421 closed the road for some
time Tuesday evening, April 11 as emergency personnel worked
at the scene of a crash that claimed the life of Larry G. Shaw,
58, of County Road 450 West, Madison (Ripley County).
Ripley County Communications received a 911 call
reporting a single vehicle accident on US 421 just North of
County Road 700 South (close to the Silver Bell Nursing Home).
When emergency service personnel arrived at the scene they found
a 1996 Ford F-250 was into a tree. Preliminary reports note
that the vehicle was being operated by Shaw and had ran off
the roadway on the east side of US 421 and traveled approximately
350 feet before impacting a tree head on.
According to David Pippin, chief deputy for the
Ripley County Sheriffs Department, physical evidence at
the scene indicated that Shaw was traveling south on US 421
at the time of the accident. There was no apparent reason that
the driver lost control of the truck pulling a utility trailer.
Shaw was entrapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the
scene by Ripley County Coroner Eric Karsteter.
Ripley County Sheriff Bill Davison noted that
the accident is being investigated by Captain Pippin who was
assisted at the scene by the Indiana State Police Sgt. Dan Goris
and Trooper Ben Bastin and Versailles Town Marshal David Adams.
Emergency services personnel at the scene included
Rescue 69, Ripley County Paramedic, Versailles Fire Department,
New Marion Fire Department and Truck 61.
Funeral services are pending at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home
in Versailles.
