Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

The South Ripley Lady Raider varsity softball team hosted the Shawe Lady Hilltoppers on Monday, April 24. freshman Melinda Berry was called on to pitch for the Lady Raiders sealing a shutout of 5-0 after 7 innings of work at the mound.

Berry held her own on the mound facing only 25 batters as the Lady Raider teammates provided the needed elements in runs and fielding to make the shutout game a reality.

A double play from third baseman Ashley Thomas, to first baseman Abbey Lemon, to catcher Janna Lloyd left the Hilltoppers stunned, and got the Raiders out of a could be bad situation with no outs at that point in the top of the fifth inning. Lady Raider catcher Janna Lloyd sent smoke from the plate to burn Shawe runners trying to steal second and third at other times during the game.

Berry walked 3, struck out 1, gave up 3 hits and pitched well as the team followed suit only giving up 1 error for the game. The Shawe pitcher struck out 8 Lady Raider batters, walked 1, giving up 5 runs during the game.
