As
I See It!
' 06 school sports year winding quickly
down
Gary Franklin - Sports Writer
It's hard to believe that since beginning this undertaking in
August of 2005, I have nearly come full circle with high school
sports activities as they will soon wind down. Some athletes
will find it far too soon, while yet others may see it far past
due.
I have mixed feelings, as my youngest will reach the realm of
a graduate, but even more than that, I have had a sincere honor
in meeting the many dignified and quality young folks that put
forth a whole lot of effort to better themselves and amuse us
who can only find that excitement through watching them.
The position as sports editor has given me far more insight
into sports and the trials and tribulations of those responsible
for putting programs together, balancing schedules, coaching,
and mastering that which is truly like a business, than I could
have ever otherwise known.
Most school staff have been more than cooperative to help see
that their student athletes get as much exposure as possible.
They should be commended for their extra effort.
For me, far greater than any of this, are the many individual
lives I have been able to become a part of. One should not take
the young folks who labor in love of a sport, or whatever their
driving force is, to be for themselves, their parents, or for
their schools, all that they can be.
As the seniors of this year's class graduate, juniors will become
seniors and so on, please continue or begin to stand by and
support their efforts. Lift them up individually, and as a group,
not only at one school, but at neighboring schools as well.
Prior to this job opportunity availing last August, unknowingly,
I had a very narrow sight to the surroundings of the youth in
neighboring schools. I thought I was dedicated, but what I have
learned is that it wasn't dedication to one school, it was nearsightedness
on my part.
Seniors I wish you the best in all you strive for. Underclassmen,
I hope to find the cooperation and competitiveness in you the
present seniors have given. To all, I thank you for a great
first year in sports' coverage opportunities and new found and
hopefully life long friendships.
