Donald Baas
Donald Baas, 55, of Sunman passed away Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the Christ Hospital in Cin-cinnati, OH. He was born at Bates-ville on December 7, 1950, the son of Herbert and Helen Myatt Baas.
Survivors include mother Helen Baas, sisters Judy Bruns of Milan and Michelle Guenther of Sunman; brothers Ronald and Dennis Baas both of Sunman; sister-in-law Donna Baas of St. Leon; two nieces and six nephews.
He was preceded in death by father Herbert Baas and brothers Daniel and David Baas.
Mr. Baas was a woodworker at Romweber Company in Batesville for over 30 years.
Visitation is today, Tuesday, August 29 from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, 107 Vine St., Sunman and after 9:00 am. on Wednesday, August 30. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 30 at 10:00 a.m. at the fu-neral home with Pastor Kristen Springmeyer of St. John Lutheran Church, Hubbells Corner officiat-ing. Burial will be at the St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery in Penntown.
Memorials may be given to the Sunman Area Life Squad.

Ronald W. "Ron" Duebber
Ronald W. "Ron" Duebber, 61, of Cross Plains passed away Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the Margaret Mary Hospital in Bates-ville. He was born at Ft. Myers, Florida on April 30, 1945 the son of Adolph and Lucinda Cottet Duebber. He was married to Mary Deller on August 27, 1966 and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Michelle Comarata and her husband Tony of Cincinnati, and Sharon (Beeper) Vickers and her husband Eric of Cross Plains; grandchildren Jenna and A. J. Comarata and Eric and Evan Vickers; his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Adolph Duebber of North Bend, Ohio; one brother, Daniel Duebber and his wife Gail also of North Bend.
Mr. Duebber was an Army vet-eran of the Vietnam War. He worked as a foreman for 31 years for the City of Cincinnati and re-cently served as building inspector for Ripley County. He was a member of the Versailles American Legion.
Graveside services were Mon-day, August 28 at the Salem Cemetery near Cross Plains with Bro. Randy Thieman of the Shelby Christian Church officiating.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in care of Stratton Karsteter Funeral Home.

Laura M. Kieffer
Laura M. Kieffer, 90, of New Marion passed away Sunday, August 27, 2006 at the Waters of Clifty Falls at Madison. She was born at New Marion on September 16, 1915 the daughter of George and Katie Nauert Wagner. Mrs. Kieffer spent her entire life in the New Marion area and was married to Phillip Kieffer. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2000.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son William Kieffer, and her brothers Edward, Charles, and Clarence Wagner.
Mrs. Kieffer was a 1933 gradu-ate of New Marion High School. She was a member of the St. Mag-dalene Catholic Church and also a member of the church’s Altar Society.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, Tuesday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Magdalene Catholic Church in New Marion with Father Rob Hankee officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery at Madison.
Memorials may be given to the St. Magdalene Altar Society in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Daniel Louis Brim, 53, of Ca-naan, died Tuesday, August 15, 2006. Funeral services will be at Vail-Holt Funeral Home, Madison.

J. Harsell Rice
J. Hartsell Rice, 86, of Osgood, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the Hospitality Hall in Batesville. He was born at Rising Sun on August 4, 1920 the son of Joel and Mary L. Gentry Rice. He was married to Ida Green and she preceded him in death on July 9, 1992.
Survivors include one son, Rob-ert J. Rice and his wife Marilyn, currently serving with the US Army in Varese, Italy; one daugh-ter, Mary Jane Rice of Indianapolis; close friend Behzat Turut; grandsons David, Steve and Kyle Rice and three great grandchildren. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, son Donald William Rice; brother, Thomas Gentry Rice and his sister, Marie Schroder.
Mr. Rice was a 1938 graduate of Rising Sun High School and was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in Europe with the 552nd engineers battalion as a staff sergeant. The 552nd was responsible for constructing the longest pontoon bridge during WWII, over the Elb River in Germany. Mr. Rice was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church, Osgood Lions Club, Osgood American Legion, Laughery Valley Project Clear and was a former member of the Osgood Library Board. He had also served with the Osgood Volunteer Fire Department and had served for 30 years on the Osgood Town Board serving various times as its president. He and his wife had formerly operated Rice’s Grocery and Rice’s Restaurant in Osgood.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 21 at 10 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles with Rev. Maxine Vallejo-Rixman officiating. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery near Aurora with military graveside rites conducted by the Osgood American Legion.
Memorials may be given to the Osgood Public Library in care of the funeral home.

Martha Hartwell
Martha Hartwell, 84, of Osgood, passed away Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Ontario County Health Care Facility in Canidaigua, New York. She was born near Napoleon on July 4, 1922, the daughter of Herman and Sena Klingworth Huffmeyer. She was married to George Hartwell on May 20, 1961 and he preceded her in death on January 17, 1997.
Survivors include one daughter, Dianna Gregg and her husband Donald of Canidaigua, NY; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sean, and Evan Gregg; two brothers, Calvin Huffmeyer of Batesville and Kenneth Huffmeyer of Osgood; one sister, Elnora Vanosdol of Elmira, NY. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Norman Huffmeyer and sisters, Mabel Lauber, Helen Schulenberg, and Mildred Ollar.
Mrs. Hartwell was a 1941 graduate of Napoleon High School and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napoleon. She was a homemaker and had worked with her husband in a tree trimming business throughout Ripley County.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 23, at 5 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napoleon with Pastor Gary Groth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 p.m. until the time of services at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. John’s Lutheran Church or Focus on the Family in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.

Dormand Akers
Dormand Akers, 82, of Colum-bus, formerly of Versailles, passed away Friday, August 4, 2006 at Hospice of South Central Indiana. He was born October 20, 1923, the son of Howard and Catherine Licking Akers, both deceased. He married Shirley Brown Akers on December 11, 1948 and she survives.
Survivors also include son David and wife Karen Akers of Columbus; daughter Donna Sue and husband Ed Schneider of Co-lumbus; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Lindsay, Cecil, Elvan and Robert Akers and sisters Valete Eads, Hibernia Baker and Cathryn Akers.
Mr. Akers was a U.S. Navy vet-eran of WWII. He retired in 1986 from the Jefferson Proving Ground as Proof Director. Mr. Akers was a life member of the Versailles American Legion #173 and Past Master and 60-year member of the Versailles Masonic Lodge #7. He was a member of the Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rites for 45 years, Order of the Eastern Star #333 in Versailles, the Columbus High Twelve Club #337 and the Bartholomew County Senior Center.
Funeral services were Monday, August 7 at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Jon Carlstrom officiating. Burial was in Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles.

Stephanie "Steph" Zidar Petroff
Stephanie "Steph" Zidar Petroff, 49, of Madison passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2006 at her residence. She was born February 24, 1957, the daughter of William and Stefani Kotar Zidar. She married Lesley "Les" Petroff of Madison on April 21, 1981 and he survives.
Survivors also include daughter Joy Coleman and husband Joe of Waverly, OH; twin sons Peter L. and Philip D. Petroff of Madison; grandsons Austin and Ethan Cole-man; her mother and step-father Stefani Kotar Zidar and Alojz Hri-bar of Wickliffe, OH; sister Maria Minick and husband Phil of Twins-burg, OH; nephews Dylan and Logan Minick; mother-in-law Marge Petroff of North Olmsted, OH; many other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father William Zidar and fa-ther-in-law Slava Petroff.
Mrs. Petroff was an instructional assistant at E.O. Muncie Elementary School in Madison and previously an instructional assistant for 17 years at Anderson Community Schools. She was raised in the St. Felicitas Catholic Church in Euclid, OH and attended the First Assembly of God in Madison.
Funeral services will be today, Tuesday, August 8 from 2-4:00 and 7-9:00 p.m. at the Dan Cosic Funeral Home in Willoughby Hills, OH. Burial will be at the All Souls Cemetery in Chardon, OH.

Willard Gordon Hughes
Willard Gordon Hughes, 78, of Versailles passed away Friday, August 4, 2006 at his residence. He was born at Bourne, KY, on February 17, 1928 the son of Charles and Sally Montgomery Hughes. He was married to Louise Batchelor on October 16, 1948 and she survives.
Other survivors include five daughters, Sally Wetzler and her husband Bobby of Versailles; Ethel Snyder of Grandview, WA; Virginia Risk of Hobart; Joy Cappel and her husband Ken of Versailles; and Dawn Kamman and her husband Chris of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben Hughes of Corinth, MS and Oscar Hughes of Hillsboro, OH; two sisters Mary Ethel Wray of Phoenix, AZ and Nonia Brown of Sterling, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, George and Luther Hughes, grandson Levi Snyder Bryant and great-grandson Cody Swinney.
Mr. Hughes lived and farmed in the Correct neighborhood south of Versailles for several years. He was a Marine veteran of WWII where he served in occupied China. He had formerly worked for Cord’s Quarry, Schmaltz Ready Mix, Versailles Dunbrik, and had retired from the Ripley County Highway Department. He was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and the Versailles American Legion.
Funeral services will be held to-day, Tuesday, August 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Fu-neral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes of the Bear Creek Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison with military graveside rites conducted by the Versailles American Legion.

Verna Bluebelle Hull
Verna Bluebelle Hull, 89, of Punta Gorda, FL, formerly of Os-good, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2006. She was born Feb-ruary 20, 1917 in Locksprings.
Mrs. Hull was a homemaker. She was a member of the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church in Os-good. She enjoyed the many activities at the church and had taught Sunday School as well.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Carl J.E. Hull and daughter Janice Jaen both of Punta Gorda, FL, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are pending later this month in Indiana. Kays-Ponger Funeral Home in Punta Gorda, FL, is in charge of Florida arrangements.

Attison F. "Shot" Wolfe
Attison F. "Shot" Wolfe, 82, of Pleasant, died Friday, July 28, 2006 at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. He was born January 9, 1924 in Elsmere, KY the son of Everett and Lucy (Baker) Wolfe, both deceased. He married Mabel L. Wolfe on August 18, 1960 and she survives.
Other survivors include one son, Phillip Matthew Wolfe and wife Christine of Canaan; one daughter, Susan Lynne Wade and husband Christopher of Hanover; four grandchildren, Melinda, Michelle, Jessica and Paige; one great-granddaughter, Haleigh Morgan; one great-grandson, Blake Andrew; one brother, Paul Wolfe of Boone County, KY; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by three brothers, J.B., Donald and James Wolfe and one sister, Faye Wagner.
Mr. Wolfe was a 1942 graduate of Boone County High School. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II rising to the rank of Private First Class and was hon-orably discharged on December 23, 1949. He was a farmer and also a pipeline engineer for 12 years for the Mid-Valley Pipeline in Ohio. He was also a member of the Florence Christian Church in Florence, KY.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, August 1 from 5-8 p.m. and also Wednesday, August 2 from 9 a.m. until time of services at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay.
Funeral services will follow visitation on Wednesday at the fu-neral home at 11 a.m. with Rev. Howard Wade officiating.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Cemetery with military rites con-ducted at graveside by the honor guard of the Vevay American Le-gion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396. Memorials may go in memory of "Shot" to the Hospice of King’s Daughters’ Hos-pital.


Virginia Frances Meyers
Virginia Frances Meyers, 84, of Versailles and formerly of Batesville, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born April 10, 1922 in Indianapolis the daughter of Harry and Ida (Fisher) Davis, both deceased. She married Paul Meyers on May 9, 1942 in Brookville and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daugh-ters, Jane Pratt of Indianapolis, Sue (Jeff) French of Versailles; one son, David (Mary Ann) Meyers of Thomasville, GA; one sister, Doris Leffler of Shelbyville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Jones, Viola Benge and Marilyn Dearinger and one brother, Howard Davis.
Mrs. Meyers was a 1940 gradu-ate of St. Paul High School. She was a homemaker, an active vol-unteer for Teachers Treasures in Indianapolis and a member of Phi Beta Psi Sorority and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 348 of Bates-ville.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, August 1 from 12-2 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home in Bates-ville.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Benge officiat-ing.
Burial will be in St. John (Huntersville) Cemetery in Bates-ville. Memorials may go to the Phi Beta Psi for Cancer Research.

Mary F. Oberlies Hashagen
Mary F. Oberlies Hashagen, 95, of Indianapolis, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2006. She retired in 1975 from Delta Tau Delta as a computer operator, was a member of Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ, was a 50 year member of Eastern Star Brookside Chapter #481 and was a life member of both the Altenheim Auxiliary and White Cross Guild Methodist Hospital.
Survivors include two nephews, Gerald (Judy) Bruns and Glenn Bruns both of Milan; five nieces, Marcia Bruns of Sunman, Janice Lingenfelter, JoAnn (Rod) Leisure, Jane (Martin) Day and Joyce Oberlies all of Indianapolis; and numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her hus-band, John R. Hashagen; parents, C.T. and Martina Dane Oberlies, Sr.; and brother, C. Thomas Oberlies, Jr.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 25 at 12 p.m. at Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ. Burial was in the Washington Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ and the Altenheim Community.

Doris I. (Dottie) Stevens
Doris I. (Dottie) Stevens, 74, of Moores Hill, died Friday, July 28, 2006 at her residence. She was born March 23, 1932 in Moores Hill the daughter of Clarence Edgar and Lula Jane (Houston) Stevens, both deceased.
Survivors include three brothers, Clayton, Edwin and Harold Stevens all of Moores Hill; one sister, Emma Weber of Harrison, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Floyd and Franklin Stevens and three sisters, Alice Palmer, Norma John-son and Loretta Siebert.
Mrs. Stevens retired from Aurora Casket with 32 years of service. She attended the Sparta Baptist Church and was a member of the Moores Hill Legion Auxiliary.
Funeral services are today, Tuesday, August 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sibbett-Moore Funeral Home, Moores Hill with Rev. Rick Burcham officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Marie Baylor
Marie Baylor, 87, of Milan, died Sunday, July 30, 2006 at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. She was born June 6, 1919 in Milan the daughter of Wilbur and Bertha (Borders) McKittrick, both deceased. She married Charles W. Baylor, Jr. on October 29, 1938 and he preceded her in death on July 24, 1982.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Baylor and Charles Baylor of Milan; four daughters, Charlene Powell of Aurora, Kay Bean of Milan, Lennie Lynd of Milan, Cindy McKittrick of Milan; one sister, Dorothy Suddith of Sunland, CA; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Donald, Lowell, Orville and Lovell McKittrick and four sisters, Hazel Warner, Freda Stumpf, Gayle Carskadon and Lenice Voss.
Mrs. Baylor was a homemaker and a member of the Eagles Lodge at Batesville.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, August 1 from 6-9 p.m. at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 2 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the New Craven Cemetery in Milan. Memorials may go to the Milan Scholarship Fund or the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame.
