Lady Eagles vs Lady Raiders
The Eagle victory, and a Lady Raider loss, put the Eagles on the positive side of the ball earlier. However as the rivalry continued this evening, the Ripley Publishing Co. Inc. traveling trophy was once again up for grabs.
The Lady Eagles have the girls' trophy from last season and the Raider boys have possession of the boys' trophy. Therefore not only are bragging rights at stake as the SR/JCD game begins, but so is the possession of the trophy.
(The boys' trophy will be up for grabs in their game slated for play on Tuesday, November 21, at SR Tyson Gymnasium.
In lady basketball varsity action, the first score went to the Lady Raiders off a FG by senior Abbey Lemon. Lemon also controlled the tip to begin the game. Already a different look for the Lady Eagles as they ran off a 16 point rally before allowing the Lady Shiners a score the night before.
Different team and different circumstances were quickly evident as the teams battled on. Lady Eagle Abby Lauber tied the game with the making of two free throws. The Lady Eagles proceeded to take the lead 4-2 with a field goal by Emily Einhaus. The Lady Raiders tied and recaptured the lead at 6-4 off the FG's of Ashley Thomas and Lemon. Not to be left behind, Lady Eagle Kiersten Young scored a FG to tie the game at 6. Back and forth the teams scored to a 14-13 Lady Eagle lead at the close of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Raiders caught and tied the game at 19. For the quarter, the Lady Eagles added 13 to the Lady Raiders 11 for a halftime score of JCD 27-24 SR.
The Lady Eagles rallied to add the first eight points of the second half and take command at 35-24 which included the third 3 point shot made by Carissa Simon. The Lady Raiders drew to within seven points of the Lady Eagles with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter, but found it all uphill from there on. The third quarter ended with a score of JCD 42-32 SR. In the fourth, the battle continued , but a win was not to happen for the Lady Raiders at home, as the Lady Eagles went on to win by a score of 57-42. The win took the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 season start, and dropped the Lady Raiders to a 0-2 count.
These two teams will play again later in the season, and possibly at the Ripley County Tournament. Each game is certain to be a crowd drawer and an exciting battle.

Lady Indians' season opener has a rough beginning
Gary Franklin - Sports Editor

The Milan Lady Indians were host for their 2007 girls basketball season opener, against the Hauser Lady Jets. The Lady Indians' season opened on Thursday night, November 9.
The old cliche of give the home team a 10 point edge was not the case, nor was the adage of labeling an official a homer due to their calls. That too was far from contention. The need for football gear would have been more appropriate as bodies flew over the varsity match from beginning to end.
The Hauser Lady Jets controlled the opening tip but failed to score. The Lady Indians put the first points on the board with a field goal scored by senior Lacee Alloway. Only seconds later, the Lady Jets found the rim for a tie at 2-2. Emily Schmaltz had jumped center for the Lady Indians to start the game, and scored a field goal to launch her team back in front 4-2. A three point basket made by Lady Jet Michelle Siebert, gave them their first lead of the game at 6-4. At the quarter's conclusion, the Lady Jets led 13-9.
The Lady Jets added with an eight point rally to open the second quarter of play, giving the Lady Indians their largest deficit at 21-9. First to answer for the tribe in the second quarter was Kelly Stutler with a field goal. Lady Indians Schmaltz and Stutler each added a free throw. Lady Indian Kady Alloway added five points and launched a pass upcourt to a speeding Denise Lawhorn, who completed the drive for the score drawing the team to an eight point deficit with 1:49 remaining in the half. Stutler scored two more FG's to bring the halftime score to Hauser 29-24 Milan.
Trimming the first half deficit of 13 points to just five as the half closed was a promising sign for the Lady Indian faithful.
Beginning the second half for the Lady Indians, Jessica Wessler scored two free throws and Stutler added a field goal to cut the lead to four. A 3 point shot made by Kady Alloway cut the deficit to only one, and a basket by Kelly Stutler sent the Lady Indians into the lead for the first time since 4-3 in the first quarter. The Lady Indians were in the lead 33-32 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter.
The Lady Jets' answer was a Siebert 3 pointer, to regain the lead 35-33. That was the last real chance the Lady Indians had of winning the game as downhill it went from that period on.
The Lady Indians trailed at the end of the third quarter, 46-35. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the fourth, the Lady Indians retained their composure and ended up with a loss by only eight points by the score of 60-52 at the sound of the final horn.
