The regular meeting of the Ripley
County Commissioners was held on Monday, December 4. Commissioners
Robert Reiners, Lawrence Nickell and Chuck Folz were all present,
as well as Attorney Neil Comer and County Auditor, Mary Ann
McCoy.
Ken Hylton, a U.S. Army veteran and Ripley County resident,
came before the commissioners to apply for the position of Veterans
Administrator, replacing Andy Clark who will retire at the end
of December.
Hylton stated that he had recently retired from the postal service.
He informed the commissioners that his postal experience has
sharpened his communications skills and his ability to work
well with people.
Hylton also gave commissioners a copy of his armed services
record. The 57-year old stated that he joined the army in 1970
and served through 1973. Commissioners president Robert
Reiners prompted, Tell us about your background with veterans.
Hylton responded that he had served on the Legislative Committee
with the 9th District. He also stated that he had approached
Andy Clark three years ago regarding the position of Veterans
Administrator, and has kept in touch with Clark in the interim.
Its a passion of mine to serve the veterans, and
I would appreciate the opportunity to serve, said Hylton.
Lawrence Nickell made a motion to appoint Hylton to the position
of Veterans Administrator. The motion was seconded by Chuck
Folz who noted, You come recommended very highly.
The motion carried unanimously with the appointment to take
effect on January 1, 2007. It was agreed that Hylton would come
in for training throughout December.
It was reported that the Indiana Department of Emergency Management
(IDEM) found no contamination at the courthouse annex coming
from the former dry-cleaning store site. They are, however,
recommending that a sub-slab be installed at the old cistern
to remove vapors and dirt. All in all, it does not appear that
the environmental problems are as widespread as originally feared.
Ted Spurlock, representing Ripley County Economic Development,
approached the commissioners regarding reactivating the Redevelopment
Commission and making appointments to the same.
Attorney Neil Comer said of the commission, It is still
in existence, it just hasnt been active. Comer went
on to say that appointments are made for one calendar year,
and carry over unless a replacement is requested. Spurlock then
asked that the commission approve: Jeff Volz, town of Osgood;
Sue Meisberger, town of Versailles; Barry Lauber, town of Holton;
Denessa Benkie, town of Napoleon; and Ted Spurlock, Ripley County
as appointees to the commission for the calendar year 2007.
Lawrence Nickell made a motion to approve. Chuck Folz seconded,
and the motion was approved unanimously.
