Watch for detours at the Wye
Wanda English Burnett - Editor
According to information from
Marvin Jenkins, public information officer for the Indiana Department
of Transportation, beginning today, June 6, traffic will be
diverted around the existing US 50/SR 421 intersection, commonly
referred to as the Wye in Versailles.
Traffic traveling eastbound on US 50 will be diverted onto a
short leg road that connects US 50 and SR 421. Eastbound US
50 traffic will turn right at SR 421 and go south a short distance
to get back onto US 50. The procedure is reversed for westbound
US 50 traffic.
Those traveling south on SR 421 will turn right onto the short
road to go west on US 50 or stay on SR 421 until reaching the
intersection of US 50 where they can turn east. This is a very
short route and will be well marked with signs and barricades.
The construction, being done by Force Construction of Columbus,
will include new pavement and markings on US 50, with that roadway
maintaining the current alignment. A small park will be eliminated
and SR 421 will be realigned with new pavement, markings, and
a new bridge structure. The new intersection of the two major
roads will be a few hundred feet west of the current intersection.
There will also be a full traffic signal replacing a flasher
at the present location.
Motorists are urged to watch for signs and barricades when approaching
the area and be mindful of construction crews.
According to previous reports the project should be completed
by the end of the year.
