Smoking
policy to be developed for Milan schools
Cindy DiFazio - Staff Writer
At the regular meeting of the Milan
School Board, Superintendent Andrew Jackson addressed the meeting
concerning a corporation smoking policy. Jackson reported that
recently there was an incident at a football game pitting smokers
against non-smokers.
Some non-smokers in the stands asked that people not smoke around
them. In answer, the smokers all lit up cigarettes simultaneously.
Jackson stated he subsequently received several complaints. An
announcement was made at the next home game encouraging people
to not smoke in the stands.
Cathy May, of the Ripley County Heart Association, informed Jackson
that Batesville and Jac-Cen-Del schools have a smoke-free policy
and asked for Milans smoking policy. In response, Superintendent
Jackson stated that within the next few months a committee of
teachers and administrators would be formed to develop an adoptable
policy. He went on to say that a smoking policy is inevitable
and will likely be mandated by the state in the future. Board
president, David Voss, during the Presidents Prerogatives
segment added that the board would like to receive input from
patrons and parents concerning the development of a smoking policy.
Jackson reported, in the Superintendents Report, that a
grant has been awarded by the Rising Sun Foundation to benefit
Milan Elementary School. MES will receive $17,816 toward the purchase
of 30 laptop computers for a mobile lab. The elementary PTO has
pledged an additional $12,000+ to complete the funding. Principal,
Jane Rogers, credited Milan Middle School principal, Teresa George,
with doing a great deal of work on the project.
A Textbook Adoption Committee has been named for the elementary
school. Members will be: teachers - Mary Pat Taylor, Dana Burton,
Robbi Gray, Renee Mischell and Kris Bushhorn and parents - Robin
Laws, Sandi Louden, Missy Cavins and Kim Honeycutt.
