A one-vehicle accident that occurred
in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 20, claimed
the life of a Madison woman and injured two more occupants in
the vehicle.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found June Voegele,
48, of Madison, had been ejected from the car and suffered fatal
injuries. Also injured were Warren Voegele, 41, who suffered
serious injuries and was flown to University Hospital in Cincinnati
via PHI. Marie Clark, 18, Madison, was a passenger who sustained
a broken arm and minor injuries in the crash.
The driver of the 2002 Hyundai was traveling southbound on Michigan
Road when he lost control. Officers say the vehicle exited the
roadway and struck an embankment causing the vehicle to roll
over. Police have not released the name of the driver who they
say has been identified. He fled the scene and had not been
located at press time. Criminal charges on the driver are pending
and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
According to information from the Ripley County Sheriffs
Department, the accident occurred about 4:24 a.m. when Ripley
County Communications received a call from a residence on Old
Michigan Road near US 421.
Sgt. Marvin Smith of the Ripley County Sheriffs Department
is the investigating officer and was assisted at the scene by
Sheriff Tom Grills, Lt. Lee Mathews, Dan Goris, ISP, New Marion
and Versailles fire departments, Rescue 69, Rescue 30, PHI Dove
Flight and Ripley County Paramedics.
