Milan man seriously injured in crash

Howard Bloss, 72, of Milan, was seriously injured after being involved in a crash Wednesday morning, January 23.

According to information from the Indiana State Police, the crash occurred about 7:45 a.m. when a southbound 1996 Cadillac driven by Bloss failed to yield to an eastbound 2007 Freightliner semi tractor pulling a bulk tanker driven by Jesse Watkins, 58, Cincinnati, OH.

The Bloss vehicle was making a left turn to drive eastbound on US 50 from SR 101 when it pulled in front of the eastbound semi. The semi struck the Cadillac broadside sending it into the median. The semi then ran off the south side of US 50 into a ditch where the trailer overturned. It is believed frost on the windows and windshield of the Cadillac may have prevented Bloss from seeing the semi as it approached.

Bloss was airlifted to University Hospital in Cincinnati in critical condition with head injures according to Sgt. Noel Houze of the ISP, Versailles Post.

The semi driver complained of some back pain, but refused transport to the hospital.

The crash is being investigated by Tpr. Jimmy Wells of the Indiana State Police. He is being assisted by Master Motor Carrier Inspector Bob Burkhead. Also assisting at the scene were: Ripley County Sheriff's office, Milan Fire Department, Milan Rescue 30, Rescue 69, Ripley County Medic and PHI air ambulance.
