Sunman
Town Council remembers long time attorney
Eastern Avenue name change discussed
Wanda English Burnett, Editor
The February Sunman Town Council meeting began
with a moment of silence for Jack Kellerman who was the Sunman
town attorney for more than 30 years. He was remembered as a person
who loved to talk to people from all walks of life. He will be
greatly missed by the Sunman Town Council. Amy Streator, a member
of the Kellerman Law Firm, was appointed as the new town attorney.
The name change for Eastern Avenue was again considered. Ken Hylton,
Ripley County Veterans Officer, stated that the POW/MIA program
is requesting that communities find a way to memorialize all veterans
killed while in action. Hylton contacted Senator Dick Lugars
office and was told that several Indiana towns are considering
name changes for streets. He reported the Sunman Legion currently
has 200 members and 14 servicemen who have been killed in action.
The idea would be to change Eastern Avenue to Veterans Way and
have a plaque erected with the names of those killed in action.
Those residents of Eastern Avenue who oppose the name change were
very much in favor of honoring the veterans, but thought it would
be inconvenient to have their addresses changed. There are approximately
44 homes and businesses along Eastern Avenue. They suggested that
the actual driveway to the legion be named Veterans Way. Another
suggestion was that no change be made until the street is repaired.
After much discussion, the item was tabled.
In other business:
The following changes were made to the Policy and Procedures
Manual: employees will be entitled to five sick days during the
calendar year and the day following Thanksgiving will be a day
off.
Wayne Jenner, who was again elected as president, signed
the 2008 agreement with LifeTime Resources in the amount of $1,100.
Council met with Janice Hosmer on March 11 to further discuss
the Pandemic flu plan.
Carl Bruns, town superintendent, reported the town has
received a small grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation
to purchase paint and signage for the railroad crossings on the
side streets.
Larry Weiler, manager of Raintree Terrace, stated the engineered
ditch on their property still is not mowable.
Marshal Bill Dramann reported 18 calls for service, 7 outside
agency assistance, and 61 reserve officer hours.
All three council members were present: Wayne Jenner, John Campbell
and Mike Wolffe. Also present to advice the council were Clerk-Treasurer
Kris Schneider and Attorney Amy Streator. The next regular meeting
will be March 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sunman Town Hall
