2008 ORVC Winter Sports Awards Banquet held at The Pines Restaurant in Madison

Another Ohio River Valley Conference high school sports program is history, and another worthy cluster of young ORVC athletes and coaches were honored for their efforts and contributions.
Approximately 70 basketball players, their coaches and school administrators, gathered at the Pines Restaurant in Madison on Wednesday, March 12, to recognize and honor the accomplishments of ORVC teams' play over the recently ended winter sports season, ie, basketball.
South Ripley High School had the honor of hosting the event, as they have at each of the ORVC banquets this school year. (The duty or honor of host is passed among the participating ORVC schools from year to year.)
South Ripley High School Principal Bob Meyer emceed the winter event, assisted in the distribution of awards etc., by Raider Athletic Director Deb Jett.
Principal Meyer opened the evening's activities with a warm welcome to those in attendance, continuing with an introduction of Ashlee (Lauber) Miller, South Ripley Lady Raider Varsity Basketball Head Coach, who offered a blessing for the meal.
Following the enjoyment by attenders of the buffet meal and desserts, host Meyer opened the award's segment of the nights program. Meyer had allowed the ladies to go to the meal line first, and followed in the awards portion under the same guidelines, stating his mother raised him to allow ladies to go first and he felt it still appropriate.

Meyer introduced the twelve member All-ORVC Girls' Basketball Team in alphabetical order: Milan Lady Indian Kady Alloway, Rising Sun Lady Shiner Jaclyn Armbruster, Madison Shawe Memorial Lady Hilltopper Maria Berry, Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebel Devin Brierly, Switzerland County Lady Pacer Courtney Cole, Madison Shawe Memorial Lady Hilltopper Ebony Inskeep, Madison Shawe Memorial Lady Hilltopper Rachel Muessel, Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Kaylin Ploeger, Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebel Sara Roth, Switzerland County Lady Pacer April Thieman, Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebel Kendall Withered and Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Kiersten Young.
Southwestern Lady Rebel Varsity Girls' Coach Donna Cheatham was presented the Girls' ORVC Varsity "Coach of the Year Award" as the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels were the ORVC champions for 2008 with a 6-0 record. (They were also secional champions in Class 2A).
Coach Cheatham has just completed her 32nd year coaching and has accumulated a career record of 565 wins -163 losses. This was her 11th year at Southwestern. She and her "08 Lady Rebels finished at 21-6. The five regular season losses were to Class 4A Columbus North 51-59, Class 4A Carmel 60-65, Class 2A Austin 63-68, Class 4A Jeffersonville 51-55 and Class 4A Columbus East following an overtime period 69-74.
They won Class 2A Sectional #44 by defeating South Ripley 86-32, North Decatur 73-40 and claimed the title by defeating Hauser 77-49.
They continued to win, taking their opening game in the regionals over Winchester 77-62, but found the sixth and final loss of the season when they met Heritage Christian. The final score was HC 60-50 SwH.
The '08 Girls' ORVC JV Award was presented to Coach Denny Bowling of the Switzerland County Lady Pacers for their perfect 6-0 ORVC season.
Presentation of "The 2008 ORVC Girl's Mental Attitude Award" was made to South Ripley Lady Raider Kellie Collier.

Meyer introduced the twelve All-ORVC Boys' Basketball Team in alphabetical order: Brandon Gehl of the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles, Miatt Gehl of the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles, Kyle Green of the Switzerland County Pacers, Myles Hornsby of the Rising Sun Shiners, Tyler Kirk of the Milan Indians. Tanner Mahoney of the Southwestern Hanover Rebels, Zack Scrogham of the Southwestern Hanover Rebels. BJ Sieverding of the South Ripley Raiders, Mark Sharp of the Switzerland County Pacers, Blake Sutton of the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles, Trent Tucker of the South Ripley Raiders and Zeph Vaughn of the Rising Sun Shiners.
Co-champion "Coach of the Year" boys' honors went to Jac-Cen-Del Eagle Varsity Coach David Bradshaw and Brian Bowen, Head Varsity Coach of the Switzerland County Pacers.
JCD Eagle Coach Bradshaw has just completed his 12th year coaching at JCD and has accumulated a career record of 168 wins - 102 losses. He and the "08 Class 1A Eagles finished this season at 18-5. The four regular season Eagle losses were to: Class 3A Batesville in the championship game of the Ripley County Tournament 39-57, after beating the Bulldogs earlier in the year 60-51, to Class 3A Greensburg after an overtime period 64-67, to Class 2A Hauser 70-81, and to Class 2A South Ripley 47-52 after beating the Raiders twice earlier 59-40 and 57-39.
They Eagles took the first two games of Class 1ASectional #60 over the Rising Sun Shiners 73-53 and the Madison Shawe Memorial Hilltoppers 60-35, before a fluke ending in being upset at South Decatur by the Cougars 51-49 in the championship game.
The Switzerland County Pacers, behind Coach Brian Bowen in his second year there, finished the season 13-8 overall, which makes him 26-16 in his young career.
The Eagle Varsity Boys' and the Pacer Varsity Boys' each ended their '08 ORVC conference play with 5-1 records.
The "08 Boys' ORVC JV Award was presented to five coaches with like season records of 4-2. JV Coach recipients were: Steve Narwold of the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles, Kendall Sheets of the South Ripley Raiders, Jason McDaniel of the Rising Sun Shiners, Burton Chambers of the Southwestern Hanover Rebels and Mark Boggs of the Switzerland County Pacers.
Presentation of "The 2008 ORVC Boy's Mental Attitude Award" was made to Jac-Cen-Del Eagle Brandon Gehl.
