Milan Lady Indians clinch '08 ORVC softball title

Gary Franklin, Sports Writer

Following wins by the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels, the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles and the Milan Lady Indians, everything about the ORVC championship bragging rights was left up for decision in a JCD vs Milan game played on Saturday morning at the Milan Community Park softball field.
The weather was right, the circumstances for a good ball game were in line with two fine teams slated to determine a solo ORVC champion or a three-way tie and the fans supporting each club showed up in their team's corners.
The Lady Indians sent their ace pitcher, senior Courtney Crabtree to the mound, as did the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles in senior Kaylin Ploeger. Catching for the Lady Indians was senior Kaity Barton and for the Lady Eagles, stand in catcher Rebecca Wagner.
Kristen Hicks who normally fills the cather role for the Lady Eagles had a previous golf outing commitment, requiring her to miss the weather related re-scheduled softball game. Young Wagner never missed a pitch as catcher, filling the position nicely for the Lady Eagles.
A pitching dual was at hand with neither allowing much in the way of hitting, however, the Lady Indians managed to get a 2-0 lead. Later in the game during a Lady Eagle rally, the Lady Eagles tied and threatened to take the lead, but the Lady Indians retired the side before trailing.
The Lady Indians would score three more runs during the six and a half innings of play, denying the Lady Eagles another score.
Lady Eagle batting
Valorie Wagner went 2 for 4 at the plate ,with an RBI single and a triple. Janine Huff was 1 for 4, Kiersten Young was 1 for 3 and Ciara Bonnlander was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Lady Indian batting
Kady Alloway went 1 for 4 at the plate, as did Becca Haugh and Kara Teer. Kaity Barton was 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 doubles. Arielle Noel was 1 for 2, Brittani Lewis 1 for 1 with an RBI and Kelly Stutler was 2 for 2 for 3 RBI's.
The Lady Indians won the game to claim sole possesion of the ORVC championship title by the final score of 5-2.
Pitching stats
Lady Eagle Kaylin Ploeger allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, struck out 3 batters and walked 4.
Lady Indian Courtney Crabtree allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, struck out 8 and walked 1.
The Lady Eagles won their home game over the Lady Indians by a final score of 4-2. In that game, the Lady Indians got off to an early two run lead and could not add to it as the Lady Eagles caught and took the game with the necessary play to score four.
With JCD in Class 1A and Milan in Class 2A, each team will face sectional play at different sites with games beginning on Monday, May 19.
Congrats to the Lady Indians and good luck to the Lady Indians, Lady Raiders and Lady Eagles as they work to extend their seasons.
