Sherrill (Schneider) Cheda
Sherrill Cheda was born in a small town in Indiana in 1936. She was the first in her family to go to University. She started a career as a librarian after marrying her University beau and moved to both coasts of the United States in short order. She worked at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore and San Francisco State College library during the tumultuous 60s. San Francisco in those days suited Sherrill's nature well. It was a place where political issues were being debated and Sherrill was soon in her element. This radicalization as well as her introduction to the women's movement were to create the foundation for her strong ethical beliefs for the rest of her life.
Sherrill was a confirmed believer in justice for all people. She knew what she thought was fair and just and she was determined to fight for those causes. She measured the world and its progress against her standard that all people should be treated fairly and have the right to learn and enjoy life. She clearly found the world wanting most of the time. Her stroke in 2004 slowed her down, but didn't stop her.
Sherrill was a feminist, an activist, and a peacenik, and she wasn't those things quietly. Her view of justice for women was that they should have every opportunity to use all of their talents. She felt we should all work to make that happen, all of the time. She thought we should hate war and violence of all sorts, except perhaps the oral and intellectual violence needed to tell violent people and warmongers what we thought of them.
Sherrill treasured the world of words, written, performed, or sung. She loved the arts for their ability to lift the mind to a higher place. She loved ideas, debate, and learning but most of all she loved reading for the great pleasure of being introduced to the imagination and talent of great writers. Books for Sherrill were like oxygen to others. Life was less if we were between publishing seasons.
Sherrill was the definition of a great friend, loyal supportive, and fun. She could introduce you to a great new recipe, or restaurant, or author all with the same enthusiasm and insightful critique. She loved to combine her pleasures and her many friends had the privilege of sharing those with her.
Nothing made Sherrill happier than enjoying her family. She adored her children and Karl's children, their spouses, the grandchildren and the many great years of true companionship and love she got from being married to Karl Jaffary.
Life is less for so many without Sherrill Cheda.
